Kyosho GS11X - pull start recoil issue

Post by ML407 »

Hi .. A new joiner ...I am 67 and retired - a lifelong model plane builder - used to be nitro now all electric ...Just finished a scratch built 1/10th scale 2 seat Spitfire 😉

I have never owned a nitro car but during lockdown I have been fettling all kinds of stuff in my workshop and recently my son in law produced a car from his loft for me to ‘play’ with ...
it was a Land Ranger like this one ..
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324027965546
It has a Kyosho GS11X motor with a pull starter ..
that’s a new concept to me .. I had only ever started an OS 15 with an electric start on an aeroplane prop spinner.

Everything is fine - stripped it down and thoroughly cleaned it all - 27mhz radio works fine - engine seems clean and turned well ..

BUT .. the pull starter had no string in it ..
went to YouTube and learned how to restring and done that with high strength 1.5mm Black Kitchen Blind Cord and it pulls a treat but doesn’t want to recoil.

It works absolutely fine off the motor and recoils very well - but when on the backplate it has this non-recoil issue - I also took out the engine plug to reduce compression ...
I originally suspected that the cord knot was catching on the backplate screws so put a spacer washer in - I did that because if I pull the starter casing away from the backplate a tad it works better - and then I melted the knot as flat as I could - no real difference ..

I did, however manage to start it - first pull after being idle 15 years.. but recoil is still an issue..

There’s very little info anywhere on a GS11X .. and no spare pull starts I can see that will fit (If indeed it is a pull start issue🤔) ... mine is a GS with a red casing and a red reel inside but an alloy backplate (some I’ve seen whilst attempting to research have a red backplate) ..

Any ideas ??

Perhaps even refer me to someone else or A N Other place??

thanks
David

is there a one way bearing in there that the pilot shaft goes thru that grabs the crank at the connecting rod? if its not working properly the recoil cant rewind after its mounted on the engine....just a guess but hope it helps

Hi - I had the backplate off briefly and the shaft that mates with the pull start had a very Heath Robinson ‘thing’ that engages with the crankshaft but I don’t remember a bearing ... I will dismantle it again and have another look and maybe take some photos 🤔😉

OWB is inside the pull start - have tried it with the backplate off the motor and it’s fine ..
Hopefully photos attached ..
I’m stumped 🤔

And it works fine .. off the motor
but when attached to the motor it is just reluctant to recoil properly ..😳

Hi, I'm a new member too. I seem to recall Kyosho started shipping kits that were supplied with that motor with an addendum to the instruction manual and a revised one way bearing that had to be installed/swapped prior to using the engine. The original one way had a similiar issue to what you are describing.

Hello,
I am a new forum member. I stumbled on the talk about Kyosho GS11X engine. I have an Kyosho Sandmaster stadium truck model year 1994 equiped with Kyosho GS11X engine. It has been unused for decades unfortunately with fuel and oil residues. So the engine won't turn at all. Took it apart yesterday and the parts are now soaked in solvent hopefully I can restore the engine. I recognize the parts and have similar issue with the puller. I wonder why there I a hole in the axel that goes through the puller. I did not see any pin in that hole, hopefully I did not miss place any part. I will report how the puller functions if I manage to clean of the oil residues. It has become like glue.

Best regards
EthanOL
(Plan is to run engine on Ethanol since methanol has become practically unavailable)
