RC10 Team Car Restoration and Cleanup

Post by jeepnut24 »

Now that my kids have some interest in RC, I decided to pull out my old RC10 Team car. After lurking the forums a bit, it seems like a common theme. This was my second proper RC car and something worked forever to purchase. The only problem was I fell in love with the RC10T almost immediately after, but thats another story... I built the car and drove it for maybe 2-3 dozen hours and eventually got hooked on full size vehicles and the RC10 has sat for 25ish years now. Never got to race it on a proper track, or even break a single part on it.

The plan is to strip the car, clean it all up, rebuild the shocks and transmission. Oh and a new shell and a better paint job my 13yr old self would be proud of. Then let my kids have some fun in the parking lot. I have an eBay RC10T in the mail that ill be building to what I would have loved to build as a kid. This one stays just like it is now with maybe a Pistol grip FM radio like I always wanted.... Gotta figure out if I can get this receiver to work with a different set of crystals. I can't bear to let it sit on a shelf so it will get some parking lot fun. Would LOVE to take it to a track too...

Ah, another wonderful time capsule from the golden age of RC. Welcome to the forums.
Happiness is having an old RC10 to restore. :D

Awesome, welcome aboard!

Love the antenna wrapped around the cardboard bit internals - don't remove this one, it's period-correct

Thanks, yeah not too much to restore actually. I picked up a new NiMH battery and charger and hope to take it for a spin. The antenna idea probably came out of RC Car Action years ago and will stay. I never was a fan of the antenna sticking up. I ordered some new tools ordered to make the teardown faster. Never have been a fan of the L shaped hex wrenches. Then it'll be grease for the transmission and a rebuild kit for the shocks. The local shop almost tried to talk me out of using the thing and putting it on a shelf... I don't think 12 year old me would have appreciated that.

I picked up some deans connectors, and took it for a drive for the first time in 25 years. Well, until the pinion set screw backed out... Too much fun.

What options are there for modern tires? I would imagine the rerelease would be close, but would they be a direct swap? Im gonna need some new tires, and some that are more parking lot friendly.
