Mardave Meteor Strip & Clean

Post by Rik »

Hi

I'm not going to call this a restoration as I'm not going to be particularly fastidious in my rebuild. I had the Meteor as a kid around 25 years ago and recently brought it from my parents house in England up to Edinburgh where I live.

It has the LWB chassis I bought as an upgrade - I've no idea where the SWB one is.
The front shocks are Kyosho - off a Pegasus or an Ultima or something

I'm stripping it down, cleaning it up and adding an ESC and new motor etc.

Stuff I've bought:

Mtroniks Autosport 20 ESC
Saturn 20T motor
New repro shell from ebay
BSP shocks (which are great but too big)
Ansmann shocks (that actually fit)
Cobra front and rear tyres
Cobra battery box (might use this to mount the battery lengthways

Some (not great) pics...

Leaky Rear Shocks. Uncovered motor connectors melted some of thereat bulkhead!

16T Pinion I think. Not sure what to use with the 20T Saturn, I have a 12T kicking about. I'm hoping it doesn't run too hot and melt the gearbox.

Looking good - great to see another Meteor being given some love! Please tell me that you've straightened out the front of the chassis - looks like its had a bit of a 'wallop' at some point in its past life - it should be around 25deg

Regarding the motor - that looks to be a 14t pinion... I would go down to a 12 if you can, I would also look at making yourself a heatsink plate that sandwiches between the motor & the gearbox molding to take away some of the heat (see the photo in the scanned mag article in my 'modified Meteor' thread in this section) The 'hottest' motor I ever ran when I raced my meteor bitd was a 27t stock & that got hot enough to warp the plastic!

I would love to get hold of a good condition shell like your green one - that was the 'optional' lexan shell but for the short chassis - I had a few of these on my original Meteor, I would get those reproduced like I had with the LWB shell.

Cheers for the comments. I have to confess I never realised about the chassis angle, there's a fair chance it's been in a wall at some point in the distant past! Kinda wish I had a vice to try and bend it back. I'll see if I can fashion some sort of heatsink and use the 12T pinion. I was looking at the heatsinks on ebay that sit on the motor with the protruding fins but I've no idea if they work well or not.

Re: the body shell, I bought it at the same time as the lwb kit and assumed it was for the lwb chassis but it seems obvious it's swb now as the servo saver bulge is in the wrong place! It's a shame I had to hack it to bits to get it to fit.

I just bought a cheap vintage RC10 off ebay (I posted pics on the welcome thread) so I might use the 20T with that and just get a stock motor for the Meteor. I took a Kyosho le mans stock 05 motor out of the Meteor but I've no idea what condition it's in.

I've been toying with getting another Meteor for spares but I think my wife would go nut if I got a third car! Then there's Schumacher CATs, Optimas, Rockys, Raiders......

Nice job, she's cleaned up well.

I picked up an almost complete car about 6 months ago, but am struggling to find rear inner and outer hinge pins to complete it. Don't suppose anyone reading this would be able to point me in the direction of any alternatives? Can't really justify buying another car to source them ( and apologies for hijacking your thread )

Associated B2/B3 hinge pins are the same diameter,I've just fitted an RC10B3
front end on my Mardave-ish Cobra-ish and used the Cobra's inner and outer
front hinge pins and shortened them to suit.
