Ive been good friends with Thomas for a while now and he's always been willing to help me out on some of my vintage projects.
I aquired this Bulldog from a fellow racer and it was new built and just about never run. Sitting on a shelf in this guys garage covered in dust I grabbed the car and had it stored away for a good 6 months before starting this project.
The car was stripped down and inspected for future ideas of modification. The red ball diff pulleys were drilled out to accomodate bigger Tungsten diff balls and the rings polished to a perfect finish.
Next the hubs were to be replaced with a set of Kyosho Optima units. Innitialy it was hard to find the right length dog bones but after scouring ebay I found a set the right legth. It didnt take long before i found the front dog bones popping out on hard cornering. It was back to the drawing board. Nothing I did would prevent or stop the shafts coming out so my next thought was universals. I simply could not find the right length uni's so called on Thomas for a solution. In the end Thomas cut the uni shaft to length and fabricated a sleeve for both ends to be glued and pressed into place. These jems work a treat and have been the best solution to a nagging problem.
While the chassis was apart I added the brass steering rack that was handed to me by the late Bob Bourbage. Bob was a legendry old skool racer from the 80's and had a successful history with the Bulldog.
Now with the rack in place, uni's sorted and Optima hubs with 2.2" hex rims on board this car was looking set for the track. After a vintage meeting I found the belts to skip after a while so I have since installed a front and rear belt tensioner to keep the belts meshed to the drive teeth.
Still not completelysatisfied with the look of the disc wheels (looking too modern) I came across some Yokomo MX-4 white spoked rims. I picked up around 5 sets of these rims along with some MX-4 discs aswell. It wasn't long before I was on to Thomas yet again this time to see if he could fab some alloy wheel hubs to mount these rims to my Kyosho taper fit axles.
Then yesterday they finaly went on to my Mugen Bulldog and I couldn't be happier. I was stoked to finaly have the look I wanted and for me these rims look like they could have been designed for this car.
