My Works 93 Runner Project. Should be fun!! ;)

Hi Guys,

I finally decided to get together one of my all time favourite modern"ish" racing buggies. The Yokomo Works 93 was simply awesome to drive and I had alot of personal success with it. Unfortunately, like alot of other racers at the time, I sold off my Works 93 to fund a new buggy, many years ago. What got me started on this Yokomo kick again, (I am also building a YZ10 runner and about 5 834b's as well - will make a thread for them too), was coming across my NIB collection of Yokomo's again. I hadnt visited them for a while, and with the Vintage festival that I am organising coming up here in Sydney Australia in June, I really thought I would like to find and run some of my favourite buggies again. I onlly had the partially assembled NIB Works 93, so I needed to find something that I could build and run on a regular basis - I have quite a few spares stashed away - so I was pretty confident I could get something happening if I got a suitable car.

Recently I picked up this rather "tragic" Works 93 for a pretty good price, the last time it turned a wheel was in an enduro in 1998 aparently! You can tell - cause the thing is almost rusted solid and requires alot of drive-train work. The plastics (underneath all the grim and rubbish) seem to be reasonable - as does the chassis. Its nothing a bit of TLC and some "tweakery" wont fix. I am certainly going to be getting onto Jay for one of those awesome shells he is producing - I have several of his repro bodies - they are truly perfect.

I am really looking forward to building and running one of these again. Hope it lives up to my memories of the car. I am also building up that brand new Works 93 from a partially started kit as well - but it is going to get the full magnesium option parts treatment along with some Team Suzuki driveshafts and axles.....

This runner will be a "racer" - but not too blinged up!

oh man - this thing is terrible!!

No rubber pads on the bottom of the gearboxes to speak of, pulleys are that full of gunk and rubbish..........the good old Simple Green is gonna get a thorough workout!

I already know that I probably need the one way pulley and the slipper pully before to long (as it is going to be a modified class runner - so probably an 8.5 Brushless). If anyone has or knows of these pulleys available somewhere - I am happy to trade (have quite a bit of 93 stuff and LOTS of other brands as well).........It "might" survice the meeting with the current pulleys, but I would rather not risk it.

Wow, that TCS pulley is wasted!! ( but might be fine on a shelf car ) but hey, the thread holes on the bulkhead look great!!

Wow Dazz, that Yokie truely deserve a full rebuild and be brought back to its former glory. Definitely my all time favourite dog together with the RPS 834. I am not sure about the compatibilty, but I have complete WCS '95 (Pavidis) front and rear diffs in excellent shape (they just need a good cleaning and full rebuild) in the BST area. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see this one back to life. Take care, David

Hey David - thanks mate - really appreciate the offer.

I am right for differential pulleys - its those pesky layshaft/slipper pulleys I really need badly - they are getting to the point that they are almost sharp - when they get to that stage - they are like razor blades and trash belts pretty quickly.

I share your love of the 834b, it is my all time favourite Yokomo - and I have gone crazy on amassing a huge stash of parts and cars over the last 10 years or so.......I think I have enough to build about 6 or seven of the buggers - from new built to hopped up to runners.......thats a story for another thread a bit later though - that one will be "ëpic", I have been resisting the temptation to build them for so long now.

Anyways, this 93 is really in need of some lovin - its a real basket case......but I love turning a sows ear into a silk purse. What will cap it off is actually driving the tyres off it in anger again.

My bad, but I also have a complete motor mount with layshaft and pulleys in the same BST thread, I actually had a complete Pavidis car in parts. Then again, I'm not sure about compatibilty.

And what about the rubber under the magnesium parts, was that a common trick BITD in order to suppress/reduce vibrations?

EDIT: I just had a look at my '93 manual and could see they were factory items. Funny that they were no more present in the later '95 WCS version?

ooooh la la! Hmmmmmm - got me thinking now!!

They changed bugger in terms of the motor mount etc etc - I am thinking that may well work actually!!

No problem, just bear in mind that the stock Pavidis had no slipper unit. I can measure parts and even compare them with my works '93 if needed.

Ther rubber mats (in my opinion) were totally essential - particularly for the magnesium bulkheads etc. The amount of stress put on those bulkheads through the suspension and general chassis flex either broke the bulkheads or teaked the chassis - or both.

Just my personal experience anyway. Havent had a 95/Pavidis myself - I was un-aware that they did not have the mats! Interesting stuff indeed!
