Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
Can anyone in the know—preferably someone with one of each—explain the differences to me in the U.S. version Cox Scorpion and the world-released Kyosho Scorpion? Not the Turbos, but the very original. What are the differences in the cars from each company? Is Liquorboxracing still around here somewhere?

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
I have always been super intrigued by the Scorpion. Probably because it was the "race car" before the RC10 (the 1984 ROAR nats had some in the stock A) and the infamous Fast Eddie Knowles dirt oval car that was in Car Action, and also was an A main runner many years after the Scorpion had gone by the wayside. I would have loved to get one, but even runners seem to command crazy prices. This is not helped by the fact that the guys who have them, seem to have 10 in the box

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
Rob, I found a survivor a few weeks ago.
Sat on a shelf for 25 years, untouched. Has 25 years of dust and dirt on it, but it's never been run. Original "box" Futaba wheel radio and everything.

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
I think they are both the same, identical but with different box only. Apparently, like a lot of Japanese cars of those days, very fast but fragile.
Compare with rc10, rc10 was almost indestructable

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
From what I can tell everything except the frame rails and flat pieces were fairly primitive castings which are inherently weak because of the amount of porosity in them. I'm going to have to check with a few old shops at home to see if something's still kicking around, these cars look pretty cool

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
The casting quality of kyosho at that time was apparently alot better than tamiyas, but yes casting parts can be brittle, and screw threats easily get damaged. Aside from that the straightness of the rails seems to be the weakest link for anything which got run.

I think the olny weak link in the buggy was the frame rails where they kicked up in the front. Almost every used scorpion I bought had bent rails. It wasn't until I got a new set that I found all mine were bent.

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
I stripped the threat on those house-shaped casting parts that hold the front suspension bar;
If you don't set enough force on those that bar just swivles up on the first landing after a jump, but then when you apply enough force ...

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
I raced first a stock Beetle, then a modified Scorpion.
The minimum weight at the time was 3pounds. We regularly had to add weight to the modified cars.
So, running 1200 MaH cells and having such a little amount of weight to push meant these cars were fast.
Shocks were the biggest let down looking back, although you had to re-shim the diff after every race day.
Awesome car, in its day.
As for the original Question, Can't help I'm afraid !

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
Hi Eau Rouge
The differences are not many: The decals and the box as far as I know. The chassies is the same, at least on the earlier versions. In Europe, the Scorpion was released by Graupner and the latest "normal-Scorpion" came with the white 5-spoke TS-rims, red frictionshocks and differential (some also had the 3-hole rear dampermount) and I don´t know if those upgrades also were on the later Cox-versions, the earlier version is practically the same though:) Other small differences (at least on the later Graupner-versions) are the small "lips" on the rear plates that holds the suspensionarms to prevent the dogbones from falling out since without them, the rearaxle tended to get pushed down too far. Also, the front pivot-arm were the same as on the Tomahawk and the TS (a little more robust). These are also small things that I am not sure about, if they also were seen on the Cox-versions. Hope this helped You out at least a little

Re: Scorpion: Kyosho vs Cox
These are really cool cars. One day I'll get one but for now I'm good.
It'll start an addiction to another car.

Hey Richie,
I've got almost enough parts to build a spare car if you want a project !!
