so, is this a "must have", or a "wouldn't hurt to have" when using lipo packs?

if you discharge below 3v per cell, bad things can happen...

i suppose though, if you were good enough at noticing when the pack drops you could be ok.

Thinking about how expensive Lipos are, I would think of it as a "must have".

well, i'd guess it's worth the $25 if it saves you from corking a $140 lipo pack.

Yep, I have a GTB. You may also want to look at the LRP Sphere.

if i were in the market again i would go with a mamba max 5700 combo, it handles 3s and i think the green is neat lookin'

speaking of Mamba, I just picked up the Castle link today and I gotta say, it's pretty cool, I haven't gotten to test much with it yet, but the completely variable throttle and brake curve setup makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!

I've raced LiPos for over a year now without cutoffs and have never needed one. I don't run any of my packs dry, stock or modified, or even come close, for that matter. My latest Novak GTB has an internal 6v LiPo cutoff in it now, though.

However, if you are running around in the yard/track, and generally drive your car/boat/helicopter until it dies, then you should definitely have a LiPo cutoff. It's one of those "how do you use it" kinda decisions.

Over discharging does not cause fires or other dangerous situations. Overdischarging ruins the chemicals inside a LiPo to the point where it won't take a complete charge again, and will never perform the way it was when it was new. The only way fires happen is when the pack is OVERcharged, or where there is a puncture that breaches the internal chemicals (cheap Chinese packs).

i think the only time i'd be worried about discharging the pack too low would be during practice. you know.................. you run the car for awhile, bring it back to the pits, change some things, go back on the track, bring it back in the pits, blah blah.
