vonMarshall stepping into the dark side of RC10 from the safe cuddly world of Tamiya

Hi all, 1st post here.

Kicked off my RC habit in 1982 with a Tamiya Sand Scorcher, saw the odd Kyosho but never an RC10 in real life.

I feel back into RC back in 2002, stumbling across a Tamiya 959 on ebay, sending $500 in cash to the seller in Japan (no Paypal in those days!), waiting nervously for a month and then being blown away be getting my hands on the last RC Car I dreamt of owning before my attention turned to 1:1 cars, girls and beer.

Have spent the last 20 years building and restoring a load of Tammy's greatest hits (Wild Willy M38 & original Hilux were the highlights) before recently falling back in love with 2WD buggies, the genre that got me going.

Having worked my way though the Wild One and Fighting Buggy, I found myself drawn to the Kyosho Scorpion and now have that and the Turbo in my collection. All this trawling through Pinterest and Instagram lead me invevitably to seeing more and more RC10's and curiosity turned to intrigue to genuine interest and then a deep desire to build and run one or two of the new releases.

Obviously RC10 is an enigma wrapped in a mystery compared to the ultra clear Kyosho and Tamiya kits which literally fall together, so I thought I had better find a group of like minded nutcases who know their stuff and who will appreciate the steep learning curve I now find myself on.

I haven't been here a year yet, but I came yearning for a 40th kit in box art on a shelf to look at.

I learned about the 89 & 91 Masami cars, 4-10 kit evolution, and what a WOIN build is all about on this forum.

Just those few items seemed to really crank up my RC10 fever and learning about parts availability in the modern day totally shifted what I thought I wanted to build.

Anyhow, that 40th kit isn't a priority for me after enough time here, we're onto other awesome stuff.

Buckle up! You've picked a great time to jump into RC10's.

Although the focus is RC10's this is a pretty broad early RC car interest forum here and some of the most helpful people you could wish to find , I've been in residence for years and only own one RC10 with mostly a collection of all the dream cars I never had as a kid probably much like you

I am a Tamiya transfer as well. AE is a great kit. You just have to get used to guessing at the instructions since nobody does instructions like Tamiya! It’s an easy switch but every once in a while you will have to build or rebuild a Tamiya just to satisfy the cravings.

Reader's digest version: an RC10 is not a particularly difficult build compared to anything else (except a Grasshopper ). In the end, it is still just tightening screws, pushing pins into place, snapping on e-clips, etc...

Use the search function or just go to the RC10 and RC10 re-re sections to see many great RC10 builds.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. Feels like I have come to the right place.

Well that is a great question and the answer is, one that does not actually exist as a kit!

Building and running RCs is a way for me to let my OCD run riot, my imagination kick in and my love of doing research occupy my mind.

So far I am leaning towards a hybrid... as an example, I now have 2 Kyosho Scorpions, one completely stock apart from a Pine Beach 380 motor swap and a Pargu aluminium wing for looks, and the other a quasi Turbo Scorpion with the longer shocks, a 19T brushless set up, but the short-wheelbase and 1.7 tires of the non-Turbo, simply because I think it looks better.

Visually I prefer the earlier versions of the RC10, narrow front suspension with short shocks, 1.7 tires, the Protech body and lots of gold.

But mechanically and for light running I want a Stealth gearbox, bearings, universals and turnbuckles.

I only get to run once or twice a year, so when I get that window, I do not intend to spend time searching for lost dog-bones or unbending delicate steering rods!

So far I have a Halsey and a Gold Team in the collection and I reckon I will end up building the rear end of the Team with the front end of the Halsey if that makes sense.

Still researching and enjoying watching every build video on YT and reading the build threads, but think I am close to moving forward.
