DS tires F1 vs Associated rubber tires

Post by JosephS »

So it looks like there are at least 2 choices for DS tires that fit stock rims.

Associated RC10DS Tires, front and rear 8829

and the Tamiya F1 F104 Rubber Tires

Is one tire superior to another? Is there one instance where the Asc tires are better than the f1 or vice versa?

Right now I have 30 year old foam tires on my DS and for no-prep pavement it's not fun to drive.

Would either tire allow bashing on flat dirt lots?
Has anyone written a tire guide for the DS?
Is there a better option with hex adapters?

I know with the DS tires I have an issue with the rear sidewalls rubbing on the suspension but they are pretty soft and offer pretty good traction on asphalt, but seem to wear pretty fast. Also, the supplied front foams are too soft in my opinion.

Not sure if the F104 tires fix any of that.
Consistency is the key I keep misplacing.

So...

I was thinking of buying some pan car wheels that fit the F1 tires. Do the DS tires fit?

The f1 tires are supposed to fit DS wheels. Should work the other way as well

I was wondering if one was a tight fit or not.

Like how you can put a 2.1 tire on a 2.2 wheel but not the other way.

F104 tires much more superior and resilient compared to the DS stock tires, they do require a break in period and conditioning helps but not required and for competition heat does help also.

Tuck the bead behind wheel lip massage tire and foam and use a metal tip on your choice of glue be patient and have fun.

Tires don’t swell since they are belted (bonus) I’ve punished these tires for months with 4.5 brushless power 🤙🏻

Before I get too deep into tires. Is there a supported race class for this chassis or is it just for nostalgia at this point?

That wholly depends on your local race tracks and if others race them. If enough people show up with them most tracks will make a class for them.

You would be able to race them in a sedan class if the rules allow.

My local Hobby Town stopped selling Associated years ago. They have a once a month parking lot race that I'm planning to join in on, but it's only for the Tamiya and Kyosho touring car models that they sell. If your LHS sells Associated, then maybe there can be enough interest to have a race series for them. Otherwise, there's this secret race track in NYC....
