Traxxas rolled out the Nitro Stampede in 1996 as a gas counterpart to the 1/10 2wd electric Stampede monster truck they released in 1994. While the pair appeared similar, save for the gas motor and its supporting parts, the Nitro Stampede shared only its shocks, front tower, body mounts, tires, and miscellaneous hardware with its electric brethren. Gone was the slender tunnel style plastic chassis, replaced with twin aluminum chassis plates connected by a composite plastic sub-chassis. Beefier skid plates and lower a-arms served as the base for the Nitro's 4-wheel independent suspension with turnbuckle camber links rather than the electrics fixed plastic links. Traxxas also utilized SRT style caster and steering blocks to allow for a conventional bushing-in-wheel arrangement, along with the SRT's fiberglass a-arm brace up front. Additionally, SRT derived rear arms and hub carriers were put into duty out back. The plastic bodied oil-filled coilover shocks with clip-in preload adjusters were carried over at all four corners, as was the plastic front shock tower, but with a redesigned rear shock tower and adjoining bulkhead. The plastic telescoping driveshafts would remain the same but connect to an updated 3.75 geared transmission with steel planetary differential housed inside a Nitro specific case. The motor was retooled as well, now a TRX-12 .12ci engine with ABC construction, o-ring sealed carburetor, bearings, revised pull starter and dual exhaust muffler. The terra style rubber tires from the electric Stampede would be mounted on white nylon 2.2 wheel from the SRT with bushings throughout. Available only as a fully assembled model with an unpainted lexan body the Nitro Stampede could be had with or without a radio system:
