hey for all of you who have done this before can you help me see if I have the right substations for this order in McMaster Carr

The one I am least sure of is the carbon steel shim in place of a diff drive ring.

I am also trying to figure out the right spacers to go between the o-rings in the shocks.

As well, I have been seeing x-rings replaced orings in the modern shocks? Is there a better performing gasket I can be using in these shocks?

Are there other commonly needed rebuild items that I am missing?

I don't ever have a problem finding similar replacement parts.

The diff rings are still relatively available. And unless the diff is just trashed, I normally don't replace them. Usually flipping and/or wet sanding them is sufficient.

And finding appropriate sized diff balls isn't an issue either. They are still available by several companies.

All of the clips and o rings are also readily available. Usually a quick search will give you a usable option for many things.

Sorry I can't be more specific about the McMaster Carr item, I never order from them. To me, they are usually over priced and their shipping rates suck.

McMaster far outweighs paying 4 bucks for 10 orings when you can get 100 for 3 bucks. Same for most of those parts. When you have 10 cars to build buying small packets adds up really quickly. I've done the math plenty of times. Maybe your location causes problems with shipping and pricing? I get parts the next day and usually like 5-6 bucks.

However I do agree that diff balls and diff rings are better purchased from associated as they are custom/cost effective. The balls are carbide and trying to buy them elsewhere is more expensive.

Just for reference, I just bought a 100 pack of -006 silicone 70A o rings on Amazon for less than $2 shipped. I prefer 50A but they can be hard to find sometimes.

The Traxxas ultra shock rebuild kit is a good source for several items. At $2.50, it's a steal.

The 1/8 e clips are a few dollars for ten of them, from Custom Works. The price is cheap enough and I know that they fit good.


I don't live in an obscure area or anything. But any time I put a M-C order together, the shipping is always insane. I don't know what the deal is. I have the same problem with Rock Auto, insane shipping.

Hmm man that sucks. But yeah Amazon can get you bulk stuff too. And the Traxxas subs are also a great idea.

This was actually kicked off because I was having trouble sourcing rings as they are back ordered at both amain and tower. They are on amazon for $6-7 a pair. Is there another place that I should be looking?

For me the shipping on the list I put up is $6.5 from MC so that isn't much of an issue. It seems like that's not really a recommended path.

+1 on the AE diff balls, as Joe said they are carbide and don't need replacing all that often. Stainless steel is actually quite soft so I would avoid that.

Most of the time a grainy diff is caused by the thrust bearing, so if you can find those in bulk you'll be better off.

Depending on whether you have top or bottom load shocks (I have both), everything except the diaphragm.

The spacers do need to be reamed for the 1/8" shafts, as they are slightly larger than a 3mm shaft. Alternatively, current 3mm shafts can be used if you can find the correct length.

The larger spacer, end piece, and snap rings fit bottom loaders. The smaller spacer is correct for top loaders. The smaller spacer and end piece are made from a more pliable material, instead of hard plastic.

The o rings are similar to currently available x ring designs. Some people don't like them but I've had good results from them.

The diaphragm also fits small Tamiya CVA's (green seal) and Duratrax gold shocks for sure. Probably fits Kyosho golds as well. However, I do think the green Tamiya seals are better quality (but cost more and can be hard to find).
