Brushless setup for Kyosho Ultima Re-release?
Brushless setup for Kyosho Ultima Re-release?
For Xmas I bought my 11 y/o son his first real RC car kit to build (Kyosho Ultima re-release, and bought 2 of everything so I can play along). I built mine already so I can answer his questions as he goes along.
For the initial setup I bought a 20T 540 motor and ESC as well as 3000mah NiMH battery packs. I have been running mine and its quick enough to be entertaining but I can definitely see wanting more power. I wanted him to learn with the basic setup and standard NiMH batteries before moving to more power and batteries that require a little more attention.
What recommendations do you guys have for a brushless setup and which lipos? I have all the chargers I would need from previous RC stuff.

These round style look authentic in the car and are cheap but work great:

as far as motors and esc's go the Lemans 240S 15.5t combo is pricey but will look great in there. The Hobbywing Justock 10.5 combo is about a a cnote and will have great power and reliability

Welcome aboard and Merry Christmas!
I have one of the GoolRC 3500kV/60a combos in a Turbo Scorpion and it runs great.
I don't recall where I got mine but here's an example.

If you will search further, you might find them at a better price.

Re: Brushless setup for Kyosho Ultima Re-release?
I've got a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 esc & sensored Quicrun 10.5 in mine. It's plenty fast to be fun & isn't very expensive.

It's a tight fit but I managed to shoehorn it all in there.

Re: Brushless setup for Kyosho Ultima Re-release?
Your pictures are very helpful.... I just got the same setup (but 60 amp ESC) and was trying to figure out what angle to put the motor at as it is tight (so far I found if the motor tires are at the back it sticks out a little too far to be protected and with the sensor on the bottom it hangs too low.... I didn't think it would fit how you have it but I will have to look again as that looks perfect). I am going to try to copy what you did in my Ultima Pro XL.
How fast would say it is? I hope to be close to my son's Traxxas Bandit (VXL brushless totally stock - I just got it for him). What pinion are you running?
Did you turn the punch down on it? I plan on it (I got the programming card) as I don't want to tear up the trans (plus seeing what my son's Bandit does to tires!). I would love to hear your observations and how it has worked out for you!
Also, in the instruction manual it shows the little bullet fittings for the motor (I guess you solder the bottom half into the little mounts on the motor?) and it also shows a quick connect to attached the 3 wires to the ESC (but I don't have them in my kit!). It looks like you just soldered yours direction to the motor?
I think I have a ball diff in my car and am thinking about ditching it. I heard the gear diffs are better? Are the ball diffs in high demand?

I have a few videos of my 10.5T/60 amp setup on youtube now but here is the most recent video. It is plenty fast for me!

Re: Brushless setup for Kyosho Ultima Re-release?
SkyRC makes the Leopard Toro motor & ESC combos in many versions. I'm running the 12T Leopard Toro combo, which is affordable and plenty of power for a RWD car, even with this combo I had to dial the Punch back quite a bit.
