Dual Sport Build from New Parts

Post by Dazza »

One of the more interesting things I acquired lately was a couple of RC10 Dual Sport conversion kits. One of these I am going to build as a shelf queen to add to my vintage collection. This will be my first vintage car made from new parts, so it will have a special place on my display shelf. I needed to add a few extra parts to make up a full kit and I have been able to do most of this with new parts, the notable exceptions being the motor mount stolen from my team car restoration, and the stealth gearbox stolen from another RC10. I will rebuild most of the gearbox / diff with new parts.

Here is the pile of new parts in bags that forms my Dual Sport kit.

On to the build!

Progress on the front end
Image
I have made a couple of changes to the kit parts so far:
I haven't used the ball end dust covers, partly because I don't really like the way they look and mainly because they are so old now they have partially disintegtated.
Figures 10 & 11 in the manual show a 4-40 x 1/2 button head screw. The kit part bottoms out in the shock mount before it is tight on the suspension arm, so I have replaced this with a 7/16 screw that fits perfectly.
Figures 30 & 31 in the manual show a 4-40 x 1/4 socket head cap screw, the kit part extends out past the end of the nose brace tube by 2-3mm, which means it hits the servo saver adjuster nut. I didn't have any socket heads that were shorter, so I replaced them with 4-40 x 1/4 button head screws which I think look better anyway.

And front end is now complete

All of these DS builds lately kind of make me want to finish the one I started... Around 16 years ago.

It didn't really take too long to collect the parts, it was more like an opportunity I couldn't refuse - a friend of mine bought an old hobby shop out of all their old stock, and I bought all the AE stuff from him. It included 2 DS conversion kits, so the parts I had to collect were not that hard to find. The main thing was some new diff parts and a new chassis from associated. I will have a few DS wheel sets for sale soon, and some tires too.

It did take a while, but that was mainly defending the arrangement from my cats!
The reason I did it was to show how many parts go into building these cars

The next installment is the transmission build, these are the only used parts in my build.

Next is the Rear end build, I had a few problems working out how to lay the parts out in some order, but I settled for this:

Looks great bud can’t wait to see it all done, is this a shelfer runner or both.

Which body are you going with?

This is definitely a shelfer, the other DS I build will most likely be a runner though.
I've had a look at a few places online and A-Main have a nice looking 68 Camaro made by HPI that fits the bill. There's also a Protoform body that is quite similar, do you know how they compare size wise to the HPI?

Time for the Dampers - there's a whole lot of little bits in here:

That pretty much disappear into these:

For the wheels I replaced the kit hubcaps with some black ones to match the overall tone of the car

And assembled

Final assembly of the car is to put these few bits together:

And ... We're done

I think the Black Hubcaps look pretty good.
