From Track to Car Park...

Post by j.costick »

It's all my Uncles fault...

He used to race 12th scale back in the late 70's / early 80's in London.

He passed on a good few years back, and I inherited a lot of his rc stuff...

Most of it was bits, but through time, I've matched this with that, with the help of those on this forum have worked out what might be what... and have these two cars to remember my Uncle by.

Problem is tho - they're way to precious to use... So I built this and went racing in the 90's...

It had lower profile tyres on it back then, a different shell, 7.2v - and it ran ok...

It uses a cutdown Tamiya F1 gear diff Axle, motor pod, rear shock. Toyota TOMS rear wheels and Gemini fronts on Associated suspension. I made the chassis plates out of quite thin carbon fiber.

Over the years, I stopped racing it on a track, and now have fun building RC12 based car park racers...

Any one go racing their RC12s in the car parks? Wanna share some pics...

Here's an old bolink car that I used to bomb around the local schools parking lot with. The car was pretty trashed when I got it, quite a few bits were missing. I rigged up a bit of this and a bit of that to make it work. I'll have to get a pic of the chassis. Surprisingly the car worked quite well.

Nice... I'd love to see a chassis pic... And what do you do to them to make them car park friendly..?

I'm a firm believer in ground clearance and quick change batteries...

It's 1/10 sorry. Ground clearance is definately your friend for parking lots. As you can see it didn't really matter how beat up the car became. I had to make a new front plate and used old 10L steering blocks. I also made a rear link suspension for it, works surprisingly well considering how rough it is.

I'm loving that...

That is a car park racer in it's true essence. Nicad's, brushed, ground clearence, home made bits and mods... FANTASTIC...

That 3 link rear sus is just magic... Do you still have it?

Here's my latest 12th...
IMAG0150.jpg[/attachment [attachment=0]IMAG0151.jpg
It's pretty rapid, and very controllable, weighing 982g on 7.2v (850g on 4.8v) 4500ma nicads... The rear wheels are what I do with my RC10 L wheels once they're worn too much for the 10th... They weigh less than the 12th scale ones of the same rolling radius... And remember, save an gram from rotating mass is the same as saving 5 grams from static mass...

Any more out there..?

I still have it, it just sits collecting dust with the others.

I like your 1/12's, the bodies seem to be in reasonable condition.
