Why do people get pissed off when they read "the nature of the hobby" ?
And sold " as is " ? They are just E-Bay listings that you as a buyer can ask questions on .

There's nothing wrong with selling something "as is", provided a person posts good pictures from every angle, so that the pictures aren't deliberately misleading of any and all flaws. If you were selling a car that had the passenger side door caved in by a T-bone accident, you wouldn't show pictures of the car from all sides EXCEPT that side.

"As is" is a well-known concept. What you see is what you get.

"Due to the nature of the hobby", however, is meaningless. The hobby has nothing to do with an object's condition, has nothing to do with the potential buyer's pickiness, either. All it seems to have anything to do with is giving the seller a loophole to sell something questionable that may not be apparent from whatever images they decided to upload or description they provided.

It is a meaningless, throw away disclaimer.

Guess what, if there is a problem with the item that the seller doesn't describe, I'm returning it, asking for a refund or partial refund and/or filing a claim with ebay and paypal. That's the "nature" of the online transaction. And the "nature" of ebay and paypal's rules will likely rule in the buyer's favor. And if they don't, you can bet the "nature" of the feedback will be negative.

You want your items to sell for top dollar and ensure positive feedback every time? Point out every single flaw that you can find and take clear close up pics of those flaws. Then offer a refund if the buyer isn't satisfied. Then list a no reserve auction. My best selling listings have always been the ones that went into the most detail of what's wrong/right with the item for sale, with no weeney cop out disclaimer.

Exactly. So many sellers see that phrase and throw it in on their auctions. How many times have you seen that phrase on NIP items...TONS! Loophole is all it is for used stuff too.

Due to the Nature of the Hobby=due to my crappy pix you can't tell how wore out this POS is so don't complain when you get it.

I know that is a generalization but in the long run it just needs a reason or need...more than usual it doesn't make sense.

i bought a tamiya rc truck a few years ago on ebay. it looked great .. i drove it and within 5 min the 1 rear hub broke.. i had spare parts and i fixed it.. then i drove it again and within 10 min the other rear hub broke.. i fixed it with my spare parts .. i didnt complain or ask for a partial refund cause thats "the nature of the hobby" .. its a joke to me people getting mad about "the nature of the hobby" And sold " as is ". get mad when they say "full ball bearings" and its all bushings,or"new parts" and its really used parts. what really makes me mad when you buy used parts and they are too damaged to use.. then you need to pay shipping to return it.

The way I interpret "due to the nature of the hobby" is that these are items that can break when using it. I think it's to protect the seller in case someone buys a buggy, bashes the crap out of it, breaks something and then tries to return it.

I don't think it's about trying to pass off crappy stuff but more to prevent someone from trying to return something they broke.

If sellers are so afraid of buyers breaking their stuff and wanting a refund, there's a simple solution to that that has nothing to do with "the nature of the hobby"...it's called "the nature of the NO RETURNS policy".

Besides, the argument is stupid. Let's transpose it to some other subjects:

- Dating agencies: "Due to the nature of the business, people are presented as is, and may come with health deficiencies, drug addictions, or not at all after taking all your money on the first date."
- Plants growing: "Due to the nature, they might grow."
- Driving: "Due to the traffic, accidents may happen."
Etc.

usually when i see that i steer away from it. from experience i know something is wrong, missing, not working or what ever with the item. other times, the reason could be that they just know the item is defective. or, in even more worse shape than what the foto is actually representing. which is also another thing i steer away from, blury fotos.

Due to the nature of the/this hobby is a disparaging statement towards the hobby in my book. You can slap that meaningless label on anything in existence. I never realized that this hobby was so bad and cut-throat that it warranted a disclaimer all its own!
