Idler gears for 6 gears tranny

Post by Brat »

I've always got the problem of the idler gears worn off too fast. Currently, TH do not have stock for them. As such, I thought of making them into aluminium alloy.
Would you guys go with stainless steel, steel or alloy?
Also, how many of you guys are still running with the 6 gears tranny? Would like to consolidate the numbers before asking my friend to machine the gears.

I have about 10 trannies of which 3 are runners. The others are spares and shelf queens.

The alloy will be an easier metal to machine and lighter so the rotating mass won't change much. I imagine the SS would be the strongest though. But then again, I am not a metallurgist.
He's an idiot. Comes from upbringing. His parents are probably idiots too.

I'd just drill 4 holes and drop a Stealth in there, but what do I know?

Yeah. I believed Stealth perform better than 6 gears but I thought not to waste the tranny that I have...Moreover, its quite costly for me to buy a complete Stealth tranny as I do not have access to the parts locally. So thought of 'making do' with whatever I have.
May I know if all the three gaers of Stealth are made of metal? Or is the idler gear plastic?

The stealth diff gear and idler gear are plastic.

Heres how to make yourself some steel idlers for the six gear.
If you have two extra dogbone drive gears for the six gear cut off the dogbone drive part with a dremel ang there ya go......works great!
Hope you understand what i'm saying...lol

Hi Spiderman,

Thank you for your suggestion. Thought of that too but the teeth for the drive part is too big compare to the plastic idler gears. The rotation feels tight...Any idea?
