paint step by step how to any interest?

Post by 87fierogt »

hey guys i wasnt sure where to post this so if its in the wrong spot feel free to move. i will be painting shodogs tamiya hard body along with another members clod body whoses needs body work and a repaint. im wondering if anyone has any interest in a step by step how to from start to finish. This is real house of kolors paint not that stuff they sell in walmart and man its worth every penny.

heres the supplyes i will be useing on both hard bodys but ive used this paint on lexan before with no problems

upol 16oz white laquer primer sold by black gold 9$
Base coat(if useing pearl or kandy as i will) white for pearl or silver, or any metallic you like under a candy color $12.00
candy or pearl coat depending on the shade you want determines how many coats but these are small 6oz cans 12.00$
house of kolor clear coat(although any enamal can be used here such as rustolem which is hard as a rock) 12.00$
polishing kit with 1800,2400,3200,4000,6000,8000,12000 grit polishing pads 13$
pack of 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper 10$
10$ shipping for the products

since i will be doing two cars it cuts down on the price a little bit due to the primer, clear, and polishing pads can be used on both. which comes out to right at 40$ a piece i am doing this free of labor as i need pictures of bodys ive done for my website i am putting up. i have plenty of cars not alot of bodys

if there is enough people wanting to see this ill gladly post it up when the owners get their bodys back to them so they can see the colors which i must say are very unique. Im useing spray cans so that people can see that you dont need million dollar equipment to have a million dollar paint job  i actually work alot better with cans on small stuff like this and i do own air brushes, paint guns, etc

awsome even if one person learns something alot of people have never attempted to shoot candy paint. also alot of people are set on only an airbrush or paint gun can lay down a nice paint job and id love to show someone that a spray can, can be just as good. the colors i got are awsome both guys said pick something and surprise me so i picked something i havnt seen on r/c cars. it really isnt all that time consuming the paint works the easyest gettin everything smooth, even, and shiney is the longest part. actually with the prior experince ive had with the company who packages this paint it comes out pretty good and looks great with minimal work. i cant wait to get to work on these two. i have a few water slide decals i had left over from a large scale build that will set of shodogs paint amazingly and with the clear on top it looks like paint

Do you have any experience painting the insides of lexan bodies using translucent paints, or "spray tint"?

I've had nothing but difficulty with either of the products.

On a side note, one time I tried to use "bulldog" adhesion promoter, on the inside of the body for my SC10, when I was trying to duplicate the colors of a diet red bull can, and it made the body look like it was a "frosty", ice-cold can of diet red bull!

yes ive had great luck actually its all in the paint. all of the testors, pactra, faskolor, etc ive also had bad luck and never could get it to lay down smooth. ive had GREAT luck with this paint type in black gold paint in google go to the 6oz aerosol and check out the kandy colors these lay down awsome. they "say" you need their brand of adheson promotor but it actually works very well without it although i havnt put really heavy use on it but from flexing it it stuck very well. its all in how ya lay it down. you want to go VERY light coats the first one bearly visible since that coat gives something for the paint to grab onto. most pearl paint such as white goes on like its not even there sometimes but when you back it with white youll see the effects great. heres a house of kolor paint job i did on a savage i paid 100 for. the blue is actually candy and is very see through you wont get a very solid color at all but when you back it man oh man it pops
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120429065818

with a Lexan body if you want a darker color buy two cans or back it with the color of the paint. the orange pearl in the pic doesnt show it well at all you have to be in the sun.

i really cant wait to get going on these im super excited and i bet the owners are too. the one color is around but not this shade and candy and the other color i havnt seen period much less pearl so im excited

yeah, that's pretty cool, I remember my first beer, but what about painting the inside of a lexan body with a translucent color, like, say, translucent pink or smoke tint?

I'm not talking about layering-up the colors, and making it ultimately opaque...I'm talking about making a transparent/translucent body, where you can sort of see the guts of the buggy/truck.

How is it possible to lay down a translucent pink, or smoke tint paint, so that the finished product is nice, even, and homogeneous ?

That is the question...

if you shoot it with candy and nothing behind it youll have a see through color ive never had great luck with any of the r/c see through colors they always seem to have streaks or else just plain ruin the body

thin the paint down with a slower/richer thinner (so it stays wetter longer), and use a gun with a wider fan at a higher air pressure.

What I'm looking for is a see-through look, but its so hard to get it to lay even; to not run and to not have streaks.

i got the white base coat & color coat, buffing pads from 1800 to 12000grit,and went and got buffing compount and polish so i have all i need but primer and clear.

this is the first body i have a buggy body from shodog in the mail so look for that added later. i will not post pics untill the owner gets it back as he wanted the color to surprise him.

heres a list of supplys i have and if you wanna follow this its what you'll need but everyones diffrent
sand paper from 180,220,320,400, 500, 600, 800,1000,1200,1500 its easyer to get most on ebay but the 1k,1200,1500 i go to pepboys or local auto paint stores i had this already so that kept some cost down
white 12 oz can of laquer white primer 5$
white 6 oz house of kolors laquer base coat 12$
laquer house of kolors 6oz color coat 12$
clear coat of you chice i will be goin with duplicolor clear it is very shiney and looks 8 feet deep 5$
buffing/polishing pad set with 1800,2400,3200,3600,4000,6000,8000,12000 grit pads. 13$ i purchased this with my own cash t keep the cost down ive been meaning to grab the set
buffing compound had it already
ice synthetic polish and wax had it already
this should be a fairly quick once the bodys done(shaved door handles and front marker lights) and strip the old paint.
this is a chevy clod buster hard body it might get a 3 carb setup from a revell 1/8th scale big deuce model and if it looks good ill have to patch the hole in the hook but it woul look like the orig big foot body.

there will be NO airbrush/compressor/buffer/etc this will be ALL hand done and with spray cans. i actually think i do better work with the spray cans, if you take your time wetsand between ALL coats and take your time. after 4-8 coats of clear are applyed(wetsanded in between and thin coats) i let it sit out in the 90 degree sun to cure(harden) the paint. i cant wait to finish this.

any questions while im doing it please ask i love to help and painting r/c,real cars, lamps, bikes, etc is a huge passion of mine and ill be going to school for this, drug counsler,or business management in a month or so

lol im hoping to have the body work done by thurs such as getting ALL the old paint off and shaving the door handles & front marker lights that will give the trucj a custom clean look. then as long as it doesnt rain friday/saturday/sunday ill spray the primer friday wetsand it saturday ill shoot the 2-3 coats of the white base coat wetsand inbetween coats and on the final coat and sunday i will lay down the mystery color coat with as many coats as i can wetsanding inbetwwen shoot the 4-8 coats wetsanding all but the final coar if it looks even and theres no dust or anything and shine real good im not gonna buff but if i have to ill buff and polish althouh i forget how long it says to wait on the duplicolor the house of kolor is 2 to 3. but theres a bunch of neat stuff im doing on this body so itll DEFF be a one of a kind and have all your buddy jelous  its deff a unique color ive NEVER seen it on an r/c car as is the case with most house or kolors paint packaged by blackgold so you dont have to buy a quart or gallon(120-500) thats why i prefer using their line since they got some great pearl, candy, they are the orig color change paint(i cant spell camelion),marbleizer, dry flake and pearl, metal flake etc.

on the buggy body ill be useing their clear in a spray can that has dry pearl powder or flakes or both but i cant say colors or which one
