I mock fit my Crown draw thru turbo kit #2 and noticed that it did not line up using the exhaust J pipe from #1. I noticed that #2 is offset to one side different than #1

I need some advice. I took off the intake and shined a light inside the turbo to see the impeller fins. I was puzzled at what I saw, it looks as if every other fin has been sheared off. I do not see any signs of catastrophic failure or deep gouges of metal bouncing around. I think it was done on purpose but why? I will call the previous owner tomorrow.

This is a really cool project. Wish someone like you lived near me, I would spend hours just looking at your car!

6/22/12- Brake options
Visited Juan of Krecs Engineering to discuss the rear arm design and anodizing. While I was there he showed me some of his other products. These are some aluminum brackets he made so one can use 1990-1996 Nissan 300zx calipers (aluminum!) on a 240z/260z/280z using 12" Brembo rotors modified to fit a Z car hub. If I go this route I would have to upgrade to a 15" rim. He also showed me how they compare to Wilwoods in size. I think this set up is kinda cool using Nissan calipers (believe it or not a lot of people are using Toyota 4x4 calipers in the front of Z cars because it is a direct bolt on), but various championships have been won with stock brakes using upgraded pads, and it would take away from my "modified period correct" theme.
Image
(This rotor is not mounted on the hub)

I used my Craigslist camera

6/30/12- Rear Control arm design/prototype
I got a house visit from Juan of Krecs Engineering with the prototype of the adjustable rear control arms! The hardware he plans on using is very similar to the fronts- heads with pillow ball bushings and adjustable turnbuckles. The main center section is mocked up using metal sheet, but the final product is planned to be aluminum (gold anodized for me).
Prototype with felt pen marking where he plans to cut, and the on car adjustable turnbuckles...
Image
Here it is next to a stock rear arm. Sorry I was using the Craigslist/Ebay camera
Image
He is using a hinge (beefy looking!) so the rear arms will articulate on pillow ball bushings. The arms will still mount to the chassis using aftermarket polyurethane bushings (I think), but it seems that they would have to be locked into place to not interfere with the movement of the hinge or effect adjustments by articulating at both points? Something I will have to ask him about. Oh, also I need a spot to bolt my sway bars.
Image
Here is a similar design by Arizona Z Car
Image
While at my house he whipped out his sharpie and signed my A-frame! I picked up a possibly homemade engine stand in trade. I will be posting pictures and collecting signatures/stickers for it. If anyone wants to send me a sticker for my engine stand I will donate 1 dollar to rc10talk. I am currently on the look out for a used cherry picker again, as advised by Klavy69 and a few others :) I will still keep my A-frame to hang parts off it for painting or cleaning! I feel lucky its been lifting my motor as well as it has so far but time to put it to lighter duty. I think it served the previous owner well for his smaller honda motors but for my purposes its on the ragged edge of reaching its limits (the center is starting to bow slightly).

You have a lot of cool things happening to that Z. Going to 15" wheels wouldn't be so bad. You could start looking for a set of the wheels you have in 15"...it would be like lookin for rc10 parts  .

Keep up the updates...

Got a call from Juan of Krecs Engineering and he finished machining my adjustable rear control arms! I picked up a couple pizzas and headed to his house... They are 6061 billet aluminum with mostly chromoly hardware the same as in the front. They will be going out to be anodized this week (gold). I won't be able to take them home for a couple weeks because there is a big Z car swap meet on July 15th, and I told him he could display my arms with his other products!

All dressed up...

My 260z has a new roommate. My dad picked up a 1987 BMW 325es. In this picture we took off all the wheels to get new tires. So far I have done the brakes front and rear, changed the starter, and got him a couple knick knacks at the junkyard like uncracked tail lights. My dad put an all new exhaust with high flow cat and muffler, and it passed smog! Its a pretty cool little car. This pic was taken while I was trading some parts, so thats why my (stock) suspension is out.
Image

Mock fit my Crown draw thru turbo kit #2 with Rotomaster AR/60 turbo and Weber dcoe 45 carb, I was happy to see that the carb adapter is also made by Crown! Sweet! This is on my recently acquired homemade engine stand, you cant see much of it but at the bottom you can see how thick it is next to my friend's orange engine hoist.
Image

July 15
I went over to a big Datsun swapmeet in Eaglerock, CA. Saw a couple familiar faces and picked up two items from them. I got a mystery brand fiberglass front lip (75 bucks) and an MSD 6A (25 bucks). I also helped one of the venders load up an engine in his van, and he gave me a car battery and a "parts" head for free!

Mock fitting the front lip and then the final product (excuse the mess)...

August 19
After a whole lot of patience and understanding I finally received my rear control arms in gold, with the latest improvements. These are the final product.
Here you can see they eliminated the need for rubber bushings and also put bolts to lock the mounts in place, so it articulates only at the heim joint.
Image
Image
Bling! They got to calling me Mr. T for my love of gold. I tried to tell them about my favorite RC cars and why I am fond of gold anodized aluminum, but they didn't get it!
Image
Here is a screenshot of the ebay ad... I'm not rich far from it, I got them in trade. The set in the ebay ad is the same set I had pics of in natural aluminum above, the ones I was originally getting. I ended up getting the third set made after they worked out all the bugs.
Image
August 26th
A while back I found some rare "early" 1974 "small" front and rear bumpers at the junkers! I hid them in the back of a station wagon and contemplated about it for a while, finally picking them up on 50% off day. The rear bumper had a big dent in it from an accident (fixable) but it also had rare over ride bar option on it (pics coming soon). I later removed the big rubber pieces and trim pictured, and now it is all metal. I will post better pics of it.
Front lip:
I also replaced a broken left turn signal light, which was broken ever since I got the car (hard to find at the junkyard!).

That's all for now! Right now I am stuck on wanting to paint the undercarriage before putting on the new control arms, but then again I like how it sits now and I want to save paint for last. I recently bought a jug of Zep Purple degreaser to clean parts, and I want to start polishing my own parts, any advice? I am currently in communication with someone about a right hand drive conversion which to me would be the ultimate (doubt the deal will go thru, its all the way in Michigan and heavy parts). I feel I have kinda strayed from my "vintage rally" theme with the turbo set up (they didn't use turbo in rally) but I think it is just too cool and rarely seen. I can always put on a set of stock carbs, aggressive tires, and raise my ride height to fulfill what would be right for the rally set up. The arms go against my "vintage" theme but they go with my fondness of rare parts, as I don't see many people shelling out the dough for them ($1380.00 complete set). I know I wouldn't be able to afford them or even consider them, the arms kinda just fell in my lap in trade. No one will see them anyway unless they look underneath or unless I catch some air off some rough terrain! However if I replace the fuel tank with a smaller fuel cell they will be visible from the back.

Its good to see someone paying attention to details and not skimping on important parts when building their hobby cars. I've been dreaming of a early body S30z for years now. I really want to sell one of my project nissans and get one. I also like to see the carb'd turbo setup! Keep up the work

Hey skunk.werkz, awesome engine swap into your 240sx, very tasteful engine choice and I see you have some camber plates, impressive. I didn't know you liked Nissan. Thanks for the kind words. Honestly when I was doing the deal for the arms you crossed my mind since you had mentioned I should get some Arizona Z car parts and this company is making similar products. I thought to myself "we will see what skunk.werkz thinks of this" or something along those lines, as I am finally replacing some of my "old ass parts". 8) Well no hard feeling or anything I know I came across a little abrasive before but hey man I was just defending my lady (Fairlady). It was a good thing actually because you gave me that motivation so thanks for that. :)

RHD update-
After messaging the guy two times today (hints of desperation) he finally replied at the end of the day saying he was unavailable to reach the computer till just now. He said we may be able to work something out for the RHD conversion parts for a price, and possibly be able to drop the parts off at my Aunt's house about 50 miles from his place in Michigan, and then if all goes well I will fly there one day, visit my aunt and fly back with the parts in my luggage (far fetched I know). I am a little worried though because he was posting on a forum that he would be willing to give the rolling shell away for free after stripping it of what he wanted, and I am sure many were chomping on that bit. That being said, I hope this goes thru! Geez I just rechecked and now people are asking about the RHD components so I guess its whoever has the biggest wallet and mine is pretty small

No harm, no foul bud! When I see someone riding the fence when buying quality auto parts I tend to get a bit nudgy with my comments. I've been subjected to the nissan crowd for what seems too long now and most guys these days are outfitting their cars with sub quality parts. Don't get me wrong, I love fiding those rare impossible to source 'period correct' parts but most of the time unless you spend lots of time cleaning them up and making sure nothing is broken you can usually substitute new and better engineered parts for important stuff i.e. suspension.

You may want to get a second opinion on the turbo. If the impellers looked to be damaged I wouldn't even hesitate to stick it on the shelf as a paper weight. Its just not worth the hassle of installing it and hoping its ok only to find out more pieces are breaking off when you test drive it :( I wouldn't trust it looking like that and i've handled a fair share of turbochargers.

You are certainly taking the right steps. The multi-link arms aren't cheap but when you finally drive the car you will know exactly why you spent the extra dough and the turbo will be fun as hell! Also you are contemplating a RHD swap? Very cool, do you plan to source a RHD column and dash as well? I wish you luck and hope you finish everything, i've been working on that 6 cyl car since 2006

Not to steal your thunder again but here is a picture of my other Nissan. 1991 RHD turbo Silvia K's - Aero

Nice RHD skunk.werkz, geez how many Nissans do you have and do you have links to a build thread? How much was it to ship your front clip? Hey I appreciate the motivation sometimes the truth hurts haha.

RHD update-9/9/12
Things are looking decent, I just checked Facebook and he said the RHD components are spoken for pending deposit. I know I said "message forum" earlier, but its actually a Facebook group page. This is the only message forum I am a member of 8) Im not even on the Datsun/Nissan one. This morning I texted with the guy in Michigan. He was trying to get me to take the whole car but I just couldn't deal with a whole car. We agreed on 50% deposit tomorrow and he will take off/cut out only what I need and drop it off at my Aunt's house and I will figure out the rest from there. So far I am thinking a one way flight to Michigan and then rent a fuel efficient car for the 33 hour drive back to California. Unless someone can give advice on bringing car parts on a plane like how much weight and size is allowed for luggage....

Here are some pics of the 1975 Nissan Fairlady Z parts car...

Turn signal/headlight switches... exact opposites of the LHD version. Awesome.

Ouch! Its split bad, but I am willing to deal with it, and that was expected. I can put a dashcap on it or repair it.

Advice/ideas how to get the parts from Michigan to California?

RHD update-
This RHD conversion is officially mine. Turns out everyone who was inquiring about the RHD parts wanted them for free. I sent 50% as a deposit, and he is starting to pull the dash and misc bits and pieces. I am so stoked. My Aunt is on board she said I can leave the parts at her place as long as I need. She is going on vacation at the end of the month anyway. The Datsun parts truck came to my house today and scooped the excess parts I had. I forgot to take a picture of my mini Datsun parts garage sale... He ended up picking up 3 heads, one valve cover, Taylor spark plug wires, an intake manifold, a set of 1972 240z pistons and rods, a set of 1981 280zx pistons and rods, and a fuel rail. Sweeeeet. Garage is cleaner too.

Datsun Parts LLC truck saves the day! AKA feeding the fiend.
Image
I also handed him my sharpie and he whipped this out. Anyone who sends me a sticker or signature on a piece of paper and I will donate 1 dollar to the forum.

Update 9/10
I just got a pic from my guy in MI. He just made one mouse homeless!
Image

9/12
He took out the RHD pedals, steering column, windshield wipers.
Image

9/13
Wiring harness, needed to be the proper length for the guages in the dash.
Image
RHD specific/ aftermarket AC but no compressor. Not sure if it uses one.
Image
Cowl behind the hood needed for the windshield wiper conversion
Image
various hardlines for the brake booster and clutch master cylinder which will now be on the RHD side.
Image
Next up is the firewall... Here is some pics of it. We are still discussing what will be cut. The rest of the car will be going to scrap so it is pretty open right now.
Image
Image
9/17
The firewall is cut out now...

Kind of can't believe that a rare RHD japanese market Datsun FairladyZ found its way to the USA only to be DESTROYED just for my selfishness.

Need help! Thinking of ways to get these parts to my house. The most practical being shipping of some kind, but I dont know where to start does anyone have suggestions on a company I can call for a quote?

My options so far....
1. find a shipping company (anyone have suggestions?)
2. fly there, rent a car and drive back (I heard renting a car for "one way" travel is expensive)
3. buy a cheap beater van needing minor repairs, make it road trip worthy, hope it doesn't break down... and then resell the van on return. I love this idea of making money back, but the round trip is about 5000 miles, I think the chances of it not breaking down is slim.

Please comment, encourage, cuss out, give advice, or just tell me I'm crazy. I think I have officially hit rock bottom with a new addiction.

your best bet is to pack up the small items and ship US mail. the firewall and anything bigger can be strapped to a wooden pallet and freighted. you can contact freight companies or possibly request a pickup, check the phone book or google around. a pallet with an engine on it is about $450, a pallet with less heavy items should be about $150-250

See if you can find someone who works at a warehouse or factory that ships large parts. They can usually ship pallets and large boxes using truck freight for much cheaper than UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc. My brother and I used to work at a local warehouse that made truck suspension parts, and we shipped car hoods, doors, bumpers, blocks, heads, transmissions, wheels, etc. for I think a flat rate of $80 for a full pallet with something like a 500 lb. weight limit. Just make sure you have a way to unload it from the truck.

You can also try Greyhound if you have a terminal near you. My brother used them to ship and has also received things from them. It usually took longer than expected and the tracking was poor at best.
