Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
I didn't like how the Associated washers that go under the steering posts are oversized on the inside dia. so I made some from black delrin.

Transverse battery cups and front bumper (both from Shapeways) dyed black.

I've followed Brian's tip on getting the CVA's to work. I think I got it but want to get the rest of the weight (motor, battery, etc.) in the tub to see how the rear suspension settles. I may need to add/subtract some of the spacers that I put in the shocks. I'll be sure to come back and post what I have in them.
Not much more to post today, got a lot of crap to do.

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
Back in Black!
I busted out the Dremel this morning and made a battery strap from black G10 (1/16" thick). It turned out ok, not Factory Works quality.
I've installed a motor and have some info to share...
At first, I used a 29T pinion with the 81T spur. The motor housing was pressed up against the screw boss on the battery cup... not digging that. I went down to a 27T (the only smaller one I have) and it clear by a paper width. I'm not sure how a 27T is going to work, have to see in the end.
If anyone has some tips on gearing to share on the B1M, please post.

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
Smaller spur gear and pinion? You should be able to keep the same ratio by going smaller on both... maybe a 70-something spur?

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
yeah just cross multiply and divide to get the same ratio...so say your goal is 29/81...and you want to run a 72t...
Multiply 29 x 72, and divide by 81...that gives you 25.8, so a 26t would get you close
Code: Select all
29 X

81 72

Finishing up (I think) on the CVA's. I used two 1/8" AE shock down stops, the black ones, and have good engagement with the tranny drives.

I should get the new spur gear Monday/Tuesday via Amazon Prime... what's not to like about that

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
Can I suggest you ditch the stock AE ballcups? They will be the weak link of your suspension... RPM all the way

Yes, RPM cups are on the way, white ones so I can dye them red!

I was on Amazon, looking for a new rain jacket and figured I'd see if I could get a 75T spur... there was one!

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
I couldn't get my head around that blue spacer on the inside and having nothing on the outside so...

The blue spacer measured 0.076" thick (with my tool) so I made an aluminum spacer 0.045" thick with a 0.020" chamfer on the inside face. Next was to add three shims to the inside and one between my spacer and the bearing. I still have good engagement with the outdrives. Now I feel better

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
I'm late to the party, but I run small spur gears in my 17.5 RC10 racers - 69/72/75. I had found some odd 73s at one point and have that in the car currently (old style slipper), geared 29/73. Once you get the smaller spur in there, you should be close to where you need to be. FYI - I've ran as high as 34/69 on very large outdoor tracks.

Re: B1M RC10 Mid Motor Conversion
I appreciate all the advice. I had been going by what's in the Worlds re release manual for gearing. When I get a chance ($$$) I will get a wider selection of pinion/spur gears.
