I was never after the ultimate 1/8 'E' car but rather a few cars that are in keeping with the old skool from Kyosho that will handle a few knocks and some fun down the park and/or BMX track with my sons. Nitro would be just too much hassle.
Electric. Plug-n-go. Easy.

I second this idea. After perusing your thread Jason, I started checking ebay for ANY older 1/8 buggy. SOme of those OFNA ultra series buggies go for CHEAP! I think it'd be nicer to have one of the hyper series ones. Cannot wait to see how your project/s turn/s out.

I've made a little progress. The mounting plate that came with the kit was way off and can't be made to work in any way, shape or form. So, after mocking things up I thought to make a template from plexiglass. Still early days but I am happy with the way things are going.

Great project JM I know you had one of these before but perhaps I can chime in and assist.


In regard to the tyres, the wider rears are hard to get these days (so too the front for that matter) so I would recommend getting a set of MP5 or Inferno rims (as they have the same fitment on the drive hex) and run modern rubber (Schumacher have a great set of grass tyres called the spiral cut if you intend to run the car at a park). Different width tyres were used by other manufacturers as well like BMT and Mugen in the early days.

Another thing to be mindful of is that the body shells are not interchangeable between the Burns and the Turbo Burns as they have different shock towers. Repro 1/8 body shells are available from Marwan or TBG.

If you did not already know the Turbo Burns you have there has an optional front brake system and a metal spur gear. Let me know if you do not want to use the front brake system and wish to get rid of it.

The drive train of a 1/8 buggy is pretty darn strong (compare the old drive shafts to modern 1/8 buggies) but the spider gears of old were also made of cast iron and were prone to very fast wear rates. I believe the Burns were pre silicone filled diffs and relied on a very heavy grease to keep it lubed (rather than to alter drive characteristics) so keep an eye on them.

Great advice. To be honest, if I fnd the power plant is too much for the chassis and gearbox I will de-tune the esc and even run less cells if need be.

As for the front brake, I wont have need for it but could use an original bumper. Would you be prepared to trade me?

Awesome. Having a look at the front braking system it would seem that the drive cup (which is on the outside of the front gearbox) has a key way in it to carry the brake disc. Obviously I need this part but will gladly send it along if you could send me back a standard replacement cup along with the front bumper.

The project continues (sorry for the lack of pics).

I've started dismantling, cleaning and prepping parts for the rebuild of my Turbo Burns car. Despite the car being a little dirty/oily and some surface rust in places the car is actually in very nice condition.

Yesterday 2 of Marwans 'BURNS' body kits arrived in the mail along with a couple of pairs of the medium width front tyres. These weren't kit standard tread design but they'll have to do for the time being.
Today 2 pairs of rear tyres arrived in mail today too (minty new).

The front brake unit has been set aside for Chris (UZZI) in exchange for a used front bumper as I am short of one.

Previous to dismantling this car I finally worked out a method of getting the motor mount to work via a new custom mounting plate. When I'm ready for the rebuild I will have pics along the way.

My electric Burns project is coming along well. I need only set up some wires to run the 4 cells and tune the electrics.

Looks the goods. Just saw the thread for the first time and was thinking maybe you could use the diffs from a VE Inferno, assuming they'd fit.

I've got a few Inferno's myself.
