Thats my original post, not much use thou i'm afraid. it does say black gear shafts wont work. but i know for a fact i snapped my silver gear shaft on my first attempt.

Well heck! Anyone have an early B4 shaft with the silver gear?

Reg, you mentioned a brass sleeve. Can you elaborate on that?

you can probably use .001" brass or steel shim stock, like from mcmaster-carr, listed as 'feeler gauge stock', and with some finesse, press it all together. it's dirt cheap other than shipping, I'd say maybe even hit up an auto parts store or something like fastenal and see if they have some. You'd have to take some measurements, maybe half a mil is what you need, .0005"

Not that I know what I am talkin about but have I read that the MIP b4 topshaft is bigger than the associated stock topshaft?

You talking about the aluminum shaft from MIP? Been looking at that one too.

Just remember a conversation about this same thing awhile back and can't find it. Might've been me(?) that was told not to get the MIP B4topshaft because it was bigger. If I can find the thread I think it had part numbers in it. Thats about all I can remember from it though...

the mip topshaft incorporates the b4 topshaft spacer into the design. because of that, you can't use it when doing the b4 topshaft swap on the 2.25 stealth because the spacer is not used.

as far as i know anyway.....

Thanks for that info. Looking at a pic of the MIP shaft you can definitely see the larger portion of the shaft. Well hell!
I'm not sure you could fit any type of shim material at all in there. Plan B...

Im sure i have a top gear/shaft with a bad gear,I replaced a few in my x6 when i had the 3 gear trans with the open bottom.

That would be great noony! Let me know if you can come up with one.

Kinda thought about using a sharp flat punch to dimple the splined area of the shaft for a press fit.

After aquiring an early B4 topshaft with the silver gear(thanks!), I can say that there is a difference between it and the newer black gear shafts. The smaller 2.65 RPM gear fit perfect onto the older style shaft.



New shaft on left, older shaft that had the original silver gear on the right. The splines are much more pronounced on the older shaft.







Perfect fit onto older shaft.
