Re: - A&L trailing arms and "World's 91" front end

Post by Asso_man! »

I recently decided to re-vamp my runner in order to make it more competitive in front of modern cars at my local club, I even plan to sell my B4 and only run a vintage RC10... The A&L trailing arms are fun, but not very easy to tweak and tune, so I replaced those with modern RPM ones, I also added a RC10T rear shock tower, and used B4 shocks with outside limiters at the rear. Some other mods are on their way: RPM tranny with B4 slipper and top shaft, I may slam it and cut the chassis, still undecided about that, I'll soon update the thread with on track pics and comments, stay tuned!

Nice, just need to chop the top off the front shock tower! Don't worry about slamming the body, the viper looks sweet already.

You can't run an RPM trans with a B4 top shaft because the RPM top shaft has a smaller gear. 2.25:1 ratio should be ok for buggy, it's just a problem for trucks with the larger tyres. Or a B3 slipper will work alright with the RPM.

Hey David - That car is really sweet, what size front shocks are you using? Personally I like the 10T
front shock tower look. Whatever, that's a really nice racer and only a good slam job could make it better.

I won't chop the front shock tower, It will only break easier and I want to keep the opportunity of using long front shocks.

Totally forgot that the RPM top shaft was different, then maybe a MIP change box with the B4 slipper and top shaft... I would prefer to use a truck tranny to slow my 10t Team Checkpoint motor... we'll see...

thanks for the nice comment, I'm using stock B4 front shocks and the front shock tower is RPM, not exactly the same as a 10T one, a bit shorter actually. I'll keep you guys posted about the developments! Cheers!

Pretty cool you have this true racing runner next to all the shelfers you build.
Gives it just that little extra.
Have fun at the track!

You CAN use the RPM top shaft with a B4 slipper though. You need the HydraDrive top shaft though. Use a Losi inner slipper hub from the HydraDrive-era with the rest of the B4 slipper parts.

I'm running a checkpoint 9x2 in my B3 with 87/16 which is a bit under geared, could go a couple of pinion teeth bigger. 87/15 works out to be the same final ratio using a 2.25:1 trans so it should be fine.

I have a RC10 runner from almost the very start of my shelf queening addiction Ed, and this one is gonna make some damage at my local club

That's just awesome, I didn't even give it a thought! The only RPM tranny I have actually has a HydraDrive topshaft, woooot! I may give it a try, thanks for the tip mate 8)

Thanks for the info. I ran it just in front of the house yesterday and it worked really well (especially the suspension, so smooth with fine-tuned B4 shocks). It's just a bit slow with the old Novak 610 HRV and a used Trinity 13x3T (gearing: 83/22). I wish I'll have some spare time this week to transfer the electronics from my Lazer ZX-5 (Novak GT7 and TC 10T motor), have some test runs this coming Sunday and shoot some action pictures!

I spent all the evening rewiring my Novak GT7, installed a super fast old KO Fet servo and an awesome Team Checkpoint 10T motor in it. I'll try to run it this Sunday at my local club, but need to figure a good starting point for the gear ratio (I have a 83 teeth spur gear). I know someone posted a chart somewhere, but can't find it back (no, really?) with the crappy search tool, any help? I thought about a 13 or 14 teeth motor gear... just consider I'm running on grass with lot of traction! Pics later and maybe some action shots from the race, stay tuned!

spur divided by pinion = ? x trans ratio = final drive

83 divided by 14 = 5.93 x 2.25 = 13.34

Thanks Jason, but I know the formula since I was a kid  I'm just after the "good ratio" for a 10t motor...

Hey Ed, that's too bad you're in Belgium and we can't see each other, I would have loved to meet you in real life! Enjoy your stay!

I made a test run yesterday with a 15 pinion gear and the car was really slow, not that slow, but in comparison with the same electronic/motor set-up in my ZX-5, it was like a turtle and I want a hase! In addition, with a 3300 battery, I almost went out of power after 5 minutes, which not what I'm used to with those batteries...
