RTR vehicles are great for introducing people to the hobby. It's easy for us mechanically inclined to forget that not everyone has the skill to build a kit, install a radio and dial in the chassis.

True, but that's where I got my knowledge! If people keep relying on the hobby stores and YouTube to fix things they will never advance. I see that side of it, but as hobby stores die out due to online pricing, there will soon be no one to fix these things when they break.

Google/YouTube/Wikipedia/etc. are all valuable tools, but there's one major caveat. Anybody can search anything on the internets, but that doesn't mean they can actually do anything they've searched. The internet is full of pseudo-experts who lack any true understanding of the knowledge they found, and lack all of the experience gained by the people who actually posted the knowledge they gained by actually doing it.

Learning information shared by experts is not equivalent to hands-on practical knowledge, experience and expertise. Researching and doing are totally different things.

I think the building aspect is why I like this hobby... if all there was is RTRs I doubt I would be into it.

I've never understood the animosity towards RTRs. I think sometimes a RTR is a good deal. Case in point are the Tamiya tamtech gear cars. A kit 935 is $104 and the RTR is $189. You would spend more than $85 for a radio,battery and paint for the body

its not that i dont like rtr its just i relate it to buying a plastic car model .. you buy it so you can build it

Maybe, but if you paint it yourself it can be a different color if you want it to be. And if you already have a stack of unused 27mhz radio transmitters, why add another one? (Kudos to Losi for figuring this out with the "Bind N Drive" models, but why did it take so long?)

I personally don't like RTRs, but I don't waste energy caring whether other people buy them or not. I just lament the lack of kit options. They don't want to worry about instruction manuals and tech support and whatnot? Fine; don't worry about it. They (pick any RC company as "they") could sell me a box with just the chassis parts and a clear body, with no instructions whatsoever, and I'll figure it out. These things aren't rocket science. Just take one car's worth of spare parts, dump them in a box, put a big disclaimer on it ("Experienced Hobbyists Only! No Warranty!"), and sell it for the price of the RTR less the cost of the electronics.

I am completly agree... and one of the most annoying things is many of the more interesting vehicles only come RTR. I know it's a traxxas and all that, but I would love to build a kit version of any model of revo... that cantilever suspension I just think is neat. It is really annoying the manufacturers are removing the part of the hobby that many of us consider the main part. Building that thousand piece puzzle that does more then just hang on a wall.

I must admit that from the point of view of a racer - most if not all the competition cars still come in kit form, sometimes individual parts come pre-assembled (the shocks for my Corally touring car came dry assembled) but I normally disassemble these parts & & re-build them as I can't be sure that they have been put together in the factory with same attention that I would.

RTR stuff kinda has its place.... it can get people into the hobby & I've been suprised recently with the quality of the supplied/installed electrics Vs cost for some of the racer grade RTR cars e.g; the Durango DEX210.

if everyone built their own "real cars" i'd be out of a job. i like those "gold chain" guys with deep pockets, a love for cars, and no idea how to build one for themselves.

Yep...usually, the more stickers you see, the less likely the person actually built it themselves. It's probably a rule somewhere, we could postulate that the number of stickers applied is inversely proportional to the level of mechanical ability.

Of course, the exception to the rule is when one is actually being sponsored.

i have touched evey part of my car and do take it to shows where someone wrote a check out for there $50,000 and dont even know anything about it
