American Top Gear
So who's looking forward to the American version of Top Gear? And instead of the tools that they've chosen for hosts, who would make the perfect hosts for the show?
My vote is for Jay Leno and Tim Allen. I don't have a third pick. Leno and Allen have the knowledge, interest, and sense of humor to make this a sure-fire hit. The current choices will be the certain demise of the show within the first season.
And who would you choose as the "Stig"?

Re: American Top Gear
Oof, Leno? I know he's got a ton of car knowledge and passion, but his humor sucks. Maybe if he didn't try to be funny. Not a Tim Allen fan either. Go back to the drawing board Halgar.
I'd probably go with a retired race car driver and mechanic. Someone who can really put the cars to the test.

Re: American Top Gear
I don't think Leno and Allen would be bad picks at all. Actually I think they would be pretty great. I would definitely take a real enthusiast first over a really funny comic. Both Allen and Leno have been behind the wheel of real race cars and know their way around a shop/garage.
How about David Hobbs & David Letterman?
The stig could be Tommy Kendall or Paul Tracy if they don't get him back into an Indy car soon...

Re: American Top Gear
Come on Mel, when it comes to celebrity and knowledge of cars, I don't think you'll find two better candidates than Leno and Allen. I don't disagree that Leno isn't all that funny as a comedian, at least not during his tenure on the Tonight Show. Before that he was great, during he was just trying too hard and missed the mark. Tim Allen is not only funny, he's a serious car buff. Both of these guys, when not in front of the camera as a funny man, are light hearted, do have a good sense of humor, and really know their way around an engine bay. Leno was interviewed for a Biography piece on motorcycles. He was just himself, a gear head with a passion for all things motorized. While he was cracking a few jokes, he was not there to be a "funny man", he was there for his knowledge of bikes, and he really is eloquent and knowledgeable about them.
And 911, if you are going to bring folks to the table who are NOT funny, Letterman would be at the top of the list, followed by Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle.
I'm not saying that Leno or Allen would be the best picks for the job, but IMHO they've got the chops to make it work and keep folks tuning in. The current crew that has been chosen is a sure failure, Adam Corolla is an idiot and the race car driver looks to be quite the tool as well, the third guy I don't recognize.

Remember, this is the internet, so my opinion means about as much as the next guys ...

Re: American Top Gear
Cant be any worse than the three absolute TOOLS they chose for the Australian series.....
I think the secret to the show being a success anywhere is that it does not try to directly imitate the series from the UK.......I get sick to the stomach when they try and introduce their version of the stig in the same way as the poms......just keep the format - but dont verbally and visually "regurgitate" the UK series.
Woops - I had an opinion on somtheing other than toy cars!
Cheers

Don't let it happen again, mister!RETRO R/C wrote:Woops - I had an opinion on somtheing other than toy cars!![]()

I think you're on to something. Considering that this is an American version of the original and all we really have here is American Muscle (or fried rice ), then what is it that the show is trying to achieve? Yeah, yeah, we've got Mercs and Beemers here, even the occasional exotic, but the American populace really doesn't revolve around the exotics or even the high end Merc's and Beemers. I've never seen a Merc SLR in these parts, not even at the local Merc dealer. What drives the American populace is SUV's and pickup trucks. Where can the show go with that for fodder?

Re: American Top Gear
I Don't know who the middle guy is (Eric S?) but I am a fan of Tanner Foust and his show about super cars, it's kind of a formula show but he can flat out drive. He went to the Race of Champions and beat David Coulthard. I think he'll be great but don't know about the others although Adam Corolla is kind of a mini me Jay Leno when it comes to cars as he drives a Datsun BRE 510 race car on the street.

Re: American Top Gear
I think the show is canceled and won't air on US television. I was glad to hear this because I hate Corolla, Faust, and whoever other generic D-bag that was gonna host the show.

I have no doubt that most of us here could do a better job than the chosen cast.

Re: American Top Gear
I could see leno doing it. He has the knowledge. I saw Tim Allen on some hot rod show and was not impressed with him for being a car guy. Guess it could not get any worse than the narrator for rides. the ex 90210 star.
Nothing will beat the UK version! They are so incredibly wacky! I just got done watching one of their episodes actually! lol

Re: American Top Gear
I don't think it would work on american television anyway, no matter who they got. Copies of shows hardly ever work.
If I had my choice of the hosts though, they would be: Travis Pastrana, Johnny Knoxville, and John Force, with Michael Andretti as the Stig
