Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
Hi, I would like to ask Gene (if possible) what markings were on the rear tyres ( tires ) on the RC10 box art car as used in the photo on the front of the box ?
Goodyear, or Team Associated, or just plain (no brand names or any other writings at all) or Proline Champion ?
I see that they seem to be also similar to the AYK Buffalo tyres?!
Same question for the front tyres.
What driver figure was used in the box art car? Was the figure modified in any way (crash helmet, visor, arms) ?
Have you got any other pictures of that actual car from the archives? Scanned in high resolution. That would be really great.
Also what speed control was used? It looks like a Novak NESC1 or a NESC4 ? And what servos ? Novak ones I imagine? Which ones? Novak NES1 ?
Got to get those details right, it's an important and iconic car.
Cheers,
Alistair G.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
I am not Gene, but we have talked about the tire thing a lot in the past. The conclusion was in fact (unoffiically verified) that the fronts/rears are AYK tires.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
1. Curtis Husting thinks the rear tires were Kyosho, but he's not sure. He thinks the front tires were Associated tires.
2. The driver was supplied by the art designer for the shoot. Associated did not provide the figure, so we can't answer this.
3. For more pictures of this car, you can purchase a book I created on it on lulu.com. This may be construed as spamming, so I won't go further.
4. No ESC was used in that car! It contained a mechanical speed control - a resistor.

WebSteve- Is that the book you originally were offering? If so, I would love to purchase one.
Thanks,

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
To correct something that I wrote, I see that the single servo (steering) is black on the box art car. I only just found out when someone today just sent me the scans of the RC10 box.
In reply to Gene (or whoever that exact info. came from), I would have to say that I'm sorry but he has to be wrong. The box art car does not have an MSC. It's definitely an ESC, and a Novak one at that. You can see the distinct orange colour and the heatsink fins. Gene must be thinking of the 1st RC10 car (not the 7th one that was used for the box art). The 1st one had orange Novak servos, and would have used a Mechnical Speed Controller and resistor (but they are both not present in all the pic's that I have seen of that 1st one) since there is an extra servo in the tub (2 in total). The box art car has no resistor or MSC.
Have a look at this scan of the side of the box ;-
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=6512
See what I mean? It's obvious that it's an ESC.
Sorry for being a pain in the ... with that
but I had to say it.
Also the rear tyres I notice have what looks to be the letters "YEAR" on them, on the box art picture of where the wheel / tyre is laying on it's side alongside the car. Hence it has to be assumed that they are the GOODYEAR marked ones that we have seen on this forum. At least on the box art car.
See scan at ;-

which comes from the photo' on the side of the box ;-
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=6510
As you can see here we are fanatical about reproducing the box art car ;-

We love the original RC10 so much it hurts
!!
I was kinda hoping that Gene could answer my 1st question about the front and rear tyres seeing as how he was the one who designed them LOL. Seriously I'd love to hear what Gene has to say as regards this point.
Cheers,
Alistair G.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
the goodyear tires were kyosho's, as steve said.
the novak esc was simply a novak. not a 1 or a 4. all it said was novak. it was their first esc.
the servo and receiver were airtronics i believe.
the driver was from the tamiya rough rider, if i remember correctly.

Is this pictures of the box art RC10 car (the 7th RC10) or pictures of the 1st ever RC10 car?WebSteve wrote: 3. For more pictures of this car, you can purchase a book I created on it on lulu.com. This may be construed as spamming, so I won't go further.
Hell no way is this spamming my good fellow, we would all love to hear the details on this book. If it isn't relavent to this forum then I don't know what is LOL. Have you got a web link that you can give me where I can click and see the details of the book, some sample pictures of the content, and how I can purchase it? I hope you do international selling since I am in NW England

I'm all ears

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
Thanks scr8p, most helpful. Which Kyosho model were they off please? Were the box art RC10 fronts and the rears off the same model of Kyosho?scr8p wrote:the goodyear tires were kyosho's, as steve said.

Have you got any more information, web links, or pictures, of that early Novak ESC used in the box art? I see that it looks like a 4 (white red black RX lead wires not red black black as the 1 was) but it has a large heatsink that the 1 and 4 both don't have. Any info. on this is appreciated.
Thanks for the heads up on the receiver, I'll do some research on this and see if I can match up the lettering on the box art scan with an actual vintage Airtronics RX. I hope it's 27 MHz as I can't legally run 72 or 75 MHz in UK !!
I would also like to know whether a BEC was used in this box art car or not, it's hard to see if there is an RX pack in that gold tub or not?
Also any help on the cells used would be good. They seem to read as Sanyo N-1200SC in the scans?

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
this was the esc.............
http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1703
the receiver was 72 band. i don't know what kyosho model the tires came from. the cells would've been 1700 sce's.

The cells seem to read 1200 not 1700. Look at the bottom of the number 2 on this scan ;-scr8p wrote:this was the esc.............

...also I don't remember them making 1700 SCE's in 1984 / 1985?!
Bummer about the 72MHz. It'll just have to be for the shelf then. I won't run it on 72MHz. Honest

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
well, maybe it is 1200.
if you already have a picture showing it, why are you asking?

Live Steam Mad:
My bad! We should have looked at the box picture first instead of going by memory! That's a receiver mounted on the rear shock tower, not an ESC. We released the LRP ICS Digital Speed Control #LRP8066 some years later - around 1995. I was looking at Curtis' prototype car, which seems to have a few differences from the box top car. His tires had no markings. He has the box top car body, but an earlier prototype version of the car.
You'll find the RC10 car book at http://stores.lulu.com/vintage_rc10.

...in particular this high res. scan of the RC10 box art ;-
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=6526
...it actually says on it " Speed Control ", and the details of it are in the 1st link. I only just found out about this today when I found this link and high res. scan.
Appologies to Tadracket for use of his scan...hope he doesn't mind.
I see that the receiver says " Receiver by Sanwa " and " Airtronics " and does seem to read channel 53 , which would make it at 72MHz frequency, which is illegal for me to use in UK! I am trying to reseach to find out what exact RX this is.
I have just noticed about the connectors on the power leads, they are known to myself as Tamiya 6V connectors. Tamiya's SP5039 / 50039 has the relevant connectors (male and female) in the pack. Can anyone tell me what the general term / name is for these connectors so I can buy generic ones of this type?
Cheers,
ARG.

Re: If you could ask Gene Hustings...
I have also noticed that the Edinger boxed cars seem to say " YEAR " ( GOODYEAR ) on the rear tyres ( tires ) as well. Hardly suprising I know since it is the same photo, but thought that I would mention it. The previous scan above was from a Cadillac Avenue box.

I had to enhance the photo to see it. I wish someone would post really high res. scans of the box!
