my 870c / '09 v-nats entry

Post by scr8p »

thanks to captain polycarbonate (jay), i finally got a yoke. thanks again dude.

it's in real nice shape. a couple things need to be replaced, but my local hobby shop has pretty much everything i need. brian hooked me up with the gear adapter to run standard spurs, shock towers, and some misc. hardware (thanks again dude). so far, i got it all torn down, and glass beaded all of the magnesium pieces. they cleaned up nice. as the title states, i'm building this to race at the '09 v-nats. so, i got some time to get it done. :)

You'll need to put some kind of protection to keep it from dulling quickly.
Like aluminium the magnesium reacts to air pretty fast.
You could maybe use some varnish or clother type clear-coat (Just try to use heat resistant for the motormount and don't use any on the areas that take the bearings°.

for now, being as though i'm gonna be using the car, im not too worried about it. plus, we have a glass bead cabinet in our shop, so if they'd start to look bad i'll just do them again. once the car is cleaned up for the last time and retired to the shelf, i'll probably give the parts a quick coat of satin clear so they stay nice. :)

Hi!
I found really interesting the treatment you gave to the magnesium parts! !
Since I also have the same problem and I would like to end with the same results as you, please give me some more details about the procedure.
I don't fully understand what a "glass bead" is; please explain, so that I can do the same or find someone with chemicals knowledge to help me!
Thanks in advance!
..
I never supposed that there are so many people with the "yokomo bug"! !

glass beading isn't a chemical process. it's an abrasive process.

AH! It's a sandblast process! What a stupid I am..
In the company I work for there are labs with sandblast / mediablast machines, so I could ask for the service.. at the price of a cup of coffee.
Just a remark: did you use particular particles for the process?
How did you set the process parameters?
I know that magnesium is quite soft, and RC parts are small, with small details such as the "Yokomo" logo.
How to be sure not to remove too much material?
Thanks again, bye.

There's no blasting involved I believe, more like a shaker, and the medium used is glass ;)

with all of the different types of blasting media, glass bead is pretty much the least abrasive. as long as you keep a decent distance away from the parts, and don't concentrate on a certain area for long periods of time, your not going to damage them.
