had my identity stolen...
yes i use a shredder and no i dont think they went thru my trash... my mail at my home isnt secure, just an open mailbox on the front of the house. i figure they got either my social security statement or my yearly benefits mailing.
so-far it's only looking like whoever has my info tried to apply for credit cards online. i guess i can be thankful it wasnt a clever crook.
i highly suggest all of you enroll in some sort of credit monitoring service with your bank.
i filed with the credit bureaus, filed a police report, called the credit card companies (macy's & discover can both kiss it...), and got copies of my credit report ,which i havent seen for a few years but its ok besides the couple initial credit inquiries from when this person made the attempts, all on oct 29th...
about 10 years ago i had some bad stuff put on my credit report, (a family members debt...) and it took almost 3 years to get it taken off. calls... certified mail... calls... certified mail... etc.... i'm really hoping i dont have to go through that again...
i literally spent almost the entire day wednesday on the phone and online trying to cover everything off, and at the end of a day of only talking to people over the phone, i hate most of them worse than the person who thieved my social number. i dont at all mean to sound racist, cause i am not... but damnit if you cant grasp MY language enough to be able to get my social security number down on at least the second attempt, you suck and should not have a job where english is required. seriously...
i've never felt more like making soap for a living than i have right now...

Re: had my identity stolen...
Identity theft sucks! My sis had it happen and it was a bank error that linked her to a 6 year old's account. That didn't stop the crap that occurred after the fact, which affected her credit and ability to open new accounts for 7 years.
We've got a post office box for all sensitive type stuff, the house box only gets junk mail and letters from family, which really mostly fall into the junk category ...
If you're interested in preserving your identity to the best of your ability
- don't use an unsecured mailbox (even a keyed podium on the street corner ), use a postal box inside a post office. A drop box does add a certain amount of security, in that it's within an occupied building, but there's not account of the facility that maintains the box, nor once you cancel that box that your sensitive mail doesn't continue to be placed in the same slot. The best secured mail is a bonified postal box.
Don't just toss junk mail or anything else with your name, address, or any other sensitive info on it. Pull labels from boxes, envelopes, mailers, and anything else. At the very least, shred these labels, best is to burn them.

=now...

Not racist either and it sucks about your problems and hope they get taken care of quickly and easily but dammit, I live in America where ENGLISH is the language we use. Either use it or be able to use it effectively enuf to communicate. Been on the phone with credit cards within the last year and it gets worse every time I have to talk to them...and YES, discover card sucks on top of it. Not so much the people but their policies. Good luck Badhoopty!

Re: had my identity stolen...
i honestly think in certain situations knowing spanish would better for customer service than english. i really wish i knew spanish. if for nothing else just for all the hot mexican women...
i wonder where the spanish calls get handled from?
ii dont think there is any real damage other than the address on my credit report that the thief tried to get the cards sent to.
i'm awefully tempted to take an hour drive some weekend and case the addy...

Not wanting to interact with folks who can't speak your language isn't racist. I mean really, if you can't communicate with whom you are talking to, how are you supposed to accomplish the task at hand? I have personally had to interact with people of all colors who are native to this country, yet don't seem to speak a word of English at all. After the 3rd of 4th time or having them repeat themselves because they are unintelligible, I usually just smile, nod knowingly, and walk away. What else can you do?
My girlfriend used to work with a woman from Peru who's been in this country for 20+ years and still speaks broken English. A couple years ago we were taking Spanish classes and my girlfriend said something to this woman in Spanish, partly to practice, partly to "be friendly", and this woman read her the riot act for screwing up her language - this coming from a woman who's speaking broken English ...

Ok, guys, my "touchy subject" alarm is going off.
I can speak English and Spanish and some Korean. Ok, I can't speak any Korean but I'm fluent in English and Spanish.

Dude - that's crap
The same happened to me last year (hence my move to HKP for my screenname rather than my real name)..
It really sucks and the repercussions are still having an effect to this day... We shred everything religiously these days and are very careful who we give our details to..

Oh, there's plenty of imagination, just not much fit for a PG rating.
Since I am a co-moderator at Clodtalk, I can't very well come over here and post things that would otherwise get me in trouble at Clodtalk. I do enjoy the latitudes that we can go to here that had to be restricted at CT due to abuse. As far as I'm concerned, these are hobby sites and really need to be maintained for kids of all ages, not those past the age of consent. IMHO, we all have more fun that way.
