went wheelin' in the zuk today!!!!

Post by badhoopty »

took my samurai to a little off road park today with a guy from work who has a wrangler.

its first time i've taken it outside of the city and my daily commute since i bought it about a year ago.
the little thing is pretty darn awesome.

i only took a couple pics. i think my friend got one of me almost tipping it while crawling over a bunch of big heavy equipment tires.

bashed both the bumper and the hitch mount. i got some of that lens tape at a truck stop on the way home. i'll probably go to the parts store and get some round flush mount tail lights and relocate them to the tailgate.

in the foreground on the right you can see the tip top of a pump and a hose coming out of some gear oil. i musta knocked the end of the hose down this morning because when i got back all the oil had syphoned itself out onto the garage floor. :|

He he, Zuks are cool as heck after Jeeps of course, lol. You can get cheap leds at a trailer supply store. I got mine from Mesa Led, they have 60 leds in them and basically are the brightest thing in the world.

Gotta love the real stuff, 1:1 that is. 8)

i definitely see a tj unlimited with trailer for the sam in the future.
it was also the first time i drove it outside the city and on open interstate. its kinda scary at times and is pretty much limited to 65mph with some headroom for passing. i had to drive through some sections of interstate that were being resurfaced, and it scared the poop out of me...

i looked around at a couple parts stores last night when i got back to town and spied the led lights but also spied the el-cheapo 8 buck normal ones.... i'll rock the tape for awhile then probably buy a shrockworks bumper.

He he, just wait until you have that Unlimited TJ lifted and you get "Death Wobble" going 65 on the highway. You will bring some new shorts the next time you drive. I have been fighting it for years. Some days are good, most are scary. That is mainly why I am getting a car for the daily stuff.

Looks like a blast! Color me jealous. I've only been off roading once, it was in an old K5 Blazer with the top off, and I was in the back. I came back covered in mud with an ear to ear smile. :D

I love mudding, well, slinging mud in a safe environment. You can have the rock crawling and extremist stuff, that's not my idea of fun. Just give me a flat open area with an inch or two of slime and I can have fun all day, two if the beer holds out. :P

Yeah, that's exactly what we did. Donuts in the mud, and a little trail running. The donuts were the most fun though, not as many branches slapping me in the face, lol.

Yeah, not much into branches slapping me in the face either. I also like the sheet metal and paint on my vehicles, so I rarely get into situations that might cause harm. LOL I used to have a 2wd Yota that was kickarse in the slick stuff. It had just enough traction to get in some really nice sliding around without getting stuck anywhere.

i like trails. whether it be a muddy one, a rocky one, or whatever.

growing up in colorado spoiled me. :? even the harder rated trails at this particular orv park were basically the access roads that you took to get to the burly stuff in co. still fun though, especially since i was always a passenger and now i got my own rig.

I got the death wobble on cj5 and ran off side road hit culvert then back onto road took the quarter panel off pinto station wangon.Ticket for left of centerlane.Lucky the girl pulled her arm in at last second.I was chasin a camaro down that almost run me off a bridge.Sunlight off cars in front of us that had stopped hit the brakes started wobbling yank wheel out my hands, managed to steer between both cars and stopped inched from the guard rail of smaller bridge over a swamp called foxs pond.Bent my custom steel pipe bumper on one side 1/4 inch back and bent edge the fender. Same jeep totaled a 71 monte carlo rearend, brakes failed on dirt road, lol traded jeep for truck n motorcycle.

Yup, we have it good here. I rarely get mud, ever. But there is one spot I know of every year that turns into a literal pit. Lots of people go there, but I am more of a "Holy crap, you aren't going to really try that are you?" type of guy. Couple of years ago I went on the scariest trail of my life called Red Cone. It is by Montezuma and Breckenridge CO. Basically it is on the top of Webster Pass. Well Webster is a fairly normal medium trail until you get to the top of it and find Red Cone. Red Cone is named that because it is the top of a mountain, above tree line, and the shale is all red. Now if any of you have wheeled on shale you know not too. Basically we ended up on the back side of the trail where it clearly states "DO NOT GO UP RED CONE PASS THIS WAY"! This way meant up it instead of down it. If you go down it you basically will die if you lose control as you will tumble down a mountain side for almost a thousand feet either way. Going up it is harder because if you lose traction you can't stop or turn around.

I went up it, lol. About 35-40 degree incline, 3 different climbs, and a pucker factor of well over 125%. That is when I knew that Jeeps are basically the whoop!

I think I understand most of what you wrote, lol. I think it was a good idea to get rid of that one. Some Jeeps are evil for some reason.

i know i've been on red cone a few times jsut from the name but i just cant quite remember it for sure. iirc coming down off the top of the trail its really really loose with really really big whoops and a really really big drop off to the right with switchbacks going down it?

the burliest trail i remember was out by grand junction. i forget what it was called but one of my friends launched his t-case chain out the side of the case on his j20 (which was just too big for the trail to begin with) and we had to wheel back to a junkyard in grand junction to get another transfer case and then wheel back to the stranded rig. not at all death defying as red cone in that if you mess up you die, but it was an extremely tough trail.

heres a pic my friend took of me messing around on some tires. it doesnt look at all like it felt... hehe.

i got a locker and beefier tcase and tranny mounts and a full coverage belly skidpan coming. then its a wrangler spring conversion and 33's.
the bumper i want is about a 9 week wait... :? :? :?

Well if you have been on the cone you remember it well. I have been all over the state. There are many scary places.

Those tires look fun. Crazy thing is some of those Michelins you are crawling on are minimum requirements for Top Truck Challenge. 52"s are becoming more and more of norm for those huge rigs.

Speaking of tires, are those Bridgestone Revos on your ride? Great tire if so! I have gone ANYWHERE I have tried with those tires. But it is a lot of the driving I think. When I make it up things that locked rigs on 35"s make it the guys just ask how, lol.

Zuk's have a huge following as you know. Did you ever see the buildup on Spike's Extreme 4x4? That was a nice Zuk.

The parts game is no fun at times. My rear carrier was on back order for a couple of months the company said. I got it 3 weks later?! lol

My cherokee had been giving me the same issues. Bought a 4" front arm drop kit, and no more wobble.
