Hiya folks,
Name's Aaron. I'm a 35 year old husband and father of two, and am taking advantage of having kids so that I have an excuse to get back into the RC car hobby!
When I was a wee lad I was into free flight, control line, and later RC planes. Got my first hobby grade car in 1983 or so. It was a Kyosho Nimitz-06. It had a very simple VW type trailing arm suspension that I've since learned Kyosho used in the '70s in their electric powered buggy (Sand Something-or-other, I can't remember the name...). It had a simple .06 nitro engine with a single needle carb, and had a bevel gear tranny with no dif. You started it by turning the rear wheels by hand! I still have the car, but don't have the body or box anymore. Looked like a rally car...
Got a Kyosho Circuit-10 Wildcat buggy after that. It was a headache, with poor castings and parts that were constantly vibrating apart, despite loctite. Weighed about 100 pounds (so it seemed) and had STIFF suspension. Started by pushing an airplane starter against a cone and running the starter. This would push the clutch bell against the flywheel and would (in theory) grip via friction and transfer the starter's rotary motion to the flywheel and engine. Getting it to grip was a PAIN. Still have that car (with the OS Max .10 FSR and the clamp on cooling head). One of these days I'll clean it up and run it again.
Moved on to an MRC/Tamiya Frog. Enjoyed dependable, relatively problem free RC action. Bought lots of hop up parts. Raced that a bit. Move up to the 'new' gold tub RC10. Raced that for a while. Sold the Frog to my cousin for way too little $$$. Traded away the RC10 (gasp....gonna get banned for that-LOL).
Bought a Mauri Big Bear. Enjoyed running (and breaking) it. Fun truck with great realism due to the detailed ABS body and very realistic tires (moreso than any other RC monster truck tires I've seen since). Things like the bumper, body mounts, chassis, and dif gears died with alarming regularity. Still had a blast with it, and am glad I kept it. Someday I'll get a new chassis, body mounts, and bumper for it and will run it gently some more.
Got an RPS Yokomo SE 4WD buggy and raced that. Enjoyed the amazing rough track handling (all tracks in my area that weren't ovals were rough). Installed the Hot Trick dual front shock setup. Put up with that dang chain. Stretching, derealing, skipping piece of @##$@#$$@... I seem to remember there being a belt conversion for it that I could never justify paying the $$$ for. Beat a lot of Optimas with that car, and am extremely glad to have it up on the mantlepiece (flanked by a couple of 21+ year old club trophies). I'll run it a little bit again soon. I'll paint up a new body for it too.
Then..............the local track closed down, the flying club lost their field, and other teenage pursuits (motorcycles, 1/1 cars, girls-----not necessarily in that order) got in the way of going to farther away tracks such as Delta. The RC stuff all got stored deep within my folks garage. Years went by. Schooling, real employment, and a wife came along...
.....And then kids came along too. My oldest saw the Big Bear at my folks place and asked about it. I got to thinking. At first I was going to get it running for the youngster to run. Common sense prevailed (the Big Bear was much too brittle for a youngster to run, especialy with the dearth of replacement parts) and I got a craigslist Traxxas Stampede instead. Kid loved it. Still does.
That got me a thinkin' about RC again. Checked out the local flying club (formed years ago, with many vets from my OLD flying club). Nobody remembers me as I'm not 12 anymore. Great club....but they're loosing their use privelages in the field they've had for years (sound familiar?). Bought some RC magazines. Talked to guys in shops. Bought a used craigslist Revo cheap and proceeded to replace every part on it (here I go again). Bought a used Losi XXXNT AD2. Raced both trucks a bit. Got a second hand XXX-4 and have raced that with some success (these new brushless powered 4WD buggies are a wee bit faster!!!). Am active in more than a few RC forums. Dug the OLD stuff outa storage and moved it to my garage. Started poking around the net for Yokomo stuff. Found this site..........
Once I figure out how to post pics here I'll shoot some of the vintage stuff and put them up.
