Lazer ZX build...

Post by Jay Dub »

Well, I have been working on my latest creation/restoration. I purchased an old Lazer ZX off of e-bay and have been slowly rebuilding/re-creating/ modifying. I have some before and after pics to post. Hope you like!. (and as this is my first time posting pics on this forum it may take a couple tries :).-Jeff

Ok, that didn't work. Went to browse in the attach file section, add the file, uploaded files (4 jpgs), submit. -Nothing! What did I miss? Thanks in advance-Jeff.

The file sizes are between 300k and 500K each. So the first set of 4 was around 1.5MB. Too large?

i'm pretty sure the max file size is 300k.

you can also preview your post before you submit it. that way you'll know if your files attached or not.

Here goes...These are pics of the car how I received it, shame what people can do to a car  I got it cheap though, and it has a CF chassis that is in decent shape. I don't believe it is stock -maybe composite craft? Also it came with a different front a-arm and hub set. RS maybe?

Here are some of the mods that I have done to enhance performance/reliability or looks. First, I retrofitted a modern style Schumacher slipper assembly to the original drive hub. Than I pinned the differential drive rings and bored a 8mm hole in the diff pulley so it would be bearing supported. Next, I replaced the aluminum washer on the layshaft that covers the one way front pulley with a thrust bearing (maybe helps with side loading :), and finally had all the aluminum parts (aluminium if you prefer :) anodised blue. Had it done at a local shop (2 full sets for the car actually) only cost me $60 USD. The guy said he could have fit more on the anodising tree if I had brought them :(-maybe next time.

Here it is, mid project. Nearly all new plastic, new shock towers and upper deck from Fiber Lyte, one way front diff, creamic bearings, rear ball diff, optional heavy duty steering, aluminum steering knuckles and rear hubs, Lunsford tie rods, ZX5 wing mounts. Soon will mount the shocks, new gear cover, rear sway bar set and a body. Hope you like.

Thanks guys. James, I was looking for an updated tower set, and yours seemed like it would be the ticket. I am nearly finished with the project (begining the radio install) and should have it running soon.

I do have one question though, as I have never run one of these cars. Does anybody run the roller brearings that are intended to keep the belt from slipping? If the car needs it I was thinking I may instal a (custom made) tensioner inside the tranny for the rear, and an adjustible ( I have a nice blue one to match the rest of the project :) ) on the front belt. -Jeff

Jay, I believe it's better to run those little rollers since it will allow the belt to stay more free. It's a lower friction method of keeping the belts on than running a tensioner.

The brass rollers I took out, as it causes wear on the belts. What I did do was cut a few bits off the holders inside the gear box to stop any damage to the belt. The car performs better with a loose front belt, but a tensioner may be advisable for when the belt gets a bit older, as it stretches a fraction.

Hope this helps, and by the way the chassis I designed made the car handle so much more as well, the shock towers were the beginning, the chassis brought the car up to todays level of competion, well for my style of driving anyway.
