Noticing an odd trend... again.

This has happened twice in the last two years, where all of a sudden, there is a rush of new users to the forums here (thanks for joining us, by the way) and immediately followed by a flood of very bizarre posts.

The most puzzling to me is this;

"I just bought this, what is it?"





Honestly, it's cool you guys are interested in the vintage RC cars—we're all happy to have you join us here. But don't you think it's a reasonable thought that you should know what something is BEFORE you buy it?

Just wondering why anyone would buy a vintage R/C car (or anything else, for that matter) without knowing what it is.

I would if it was some obscure vintage 1/8th on road gas car I had never seen before, I have done it before.... but I hear what you are saying.

I would agree, one should know what the item is, or have a darn good idea, before purchasing. The only caveat to that I can think of is when purchasing a lot, knowing what one tasty morsel is, then trying to figure out what the rest of the poop in the box is all about. I did that last year when I found a nearly mint condition HiLux chassis buried in a box under garbage R/C's. Under all of that was something that had Tamiya written on it with a Futaba radio. I knew it was more than just a junk R/C, but had no idea what it was, which is what brought me here. You guys identified it as a Fox without skipping a beat (thanks again for that, btw ). Since then I've stuck around - somebody's got to keep scr8p and erich and Tad in line.

I can understand the lot of stuff thing. I've had stuff come in that I didn't know what it was, and to be able to re-sell, it helps to find out exactly what you have. I donno if these tend to look like that though.

It looks like, "hey, I just bought this car, what the hell did I buy?"


Maybe I'm mis-reading them, but they did pop up last year at some point, too. It was the same kind of stuff.

I definately would buy a vintage RC car without knowing what it was if it was clean, complete and cheap.

One reason for the big surge in members may be the Vintage Nationals.
Also, if I can get a deal cheap enough I would buy it without knowing what it was if it "looked cool"-- chain drive, lots of metal bits, early buggy designs. I've placed low bids on a couple AYKs, Schueys and Kyoshos and never owned one in my life. If I ever won, this would be the place that I'd come looking for help--- and maybe TC after that!

I have bought RC's not knowing what they actually were. Like others have said, if the deal is good enough, and the car looks cool enough, why not? I still don't know for sure who made my 1/8 electric Indy car, but it was cheap as hell, and it looks cool sitting on my shelf next to my RC10's.

Well since I'm one of the members your talking about i can tell you why i'm here.
15 years ago all i did was 1/10 scale electric. last things i owned was a LXT with the xx gray tranny conversion.
and a RC10 champ.losi Junior- T

up untill now i have been in 1/8 gas. i still have my Mugen MBX-5r,RC8,Kyosho STRR, LOsi Raminator.

But i am alittle fed up with 1/8 scale now so i will be goin back to my roots which was the 1990-1994 era
hence the recent purchases of rc10 team car,3rc10T's,1 original rc10gt,yoke 870c,YZ10,xxt,xx buggy i love to work on the cars and will be building a long arm rc10 runner as soon as i get the parts and i am restoring the yoke to run too.

but hey I'm not here to make money. the only things i will be selling is the losi stuff as i really need to stick with the rc10's i love to convert thos things and losi's just don't inspire me to do anything with them.

I'll have to pass. I don't think I could pull it off, not everyone looks as good as you do in an inflatable suit. Besides, you're a buggy thingy kinda guy, you wouldn't know what to do with a HiLux.

Sorry, I guess I forget sometimes that this is a hobby and not filled with collectors necessarily. As a collector and builder, I can't imagine buying something unknown. I guess my purchases of anything are always over-thought and analyzed before dropping any cash.


Regardless, it is odd how this seems to happen in waves here.
