Current Radio For 90s RC10GT

Post by jackdc100 »

I was able to find my old RC10GT at my parents' house. Unfortunately The transmitter was nowhere to be found. Does anyone make a set that includes a transmitter, receiver, and 2 servos that will drop into this truck? I was able to find a Futaba Magnum junior transmitter there but the batteries inside of it have exploded so I don't know if it will work. The Reciever and servos currently in the old RC10GT are Airtronics so I don't know if they would work with the old Futaba anyways. The crystals in the Futaba transmitter and the Airtronics receiver are a different frequency too. I was inclined to just replace all of the electronics if there is something affordable and solid. I am worried a little bit about runaways so I don't want to go too cheap. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah I can find a package with a transmitter, receiver and 1 servo but not two except for a questionable eBay listing.

I still like my RadioLink V2. I actually just ordered a V3 to replace it, because I am going to leave my V2 with my Infraction that I am selling. The V3 has 30 models, and the ~$17 receivers for it have gyros, which I like.

This will just be a Tx and Rx. For servos, I either just run Futaba S3004s / S148s / S-U300s, which are all $15 or cheaper and readily available, or these generic guys: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GLMDJQ7?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3 for $18 each.
I build RCs like people would have done back in the '90s ..................................... if they had 3D printers.

For servos, I'd look at Savox's budget line or get some takeouts off Ebay. Reedy servos commonly go for $15-20 each.

Oh that's maybe in my budget. Sounds good. So all that stuff is compatible? My experience has only been to buy all that stuff as a package.

With minor differences in the plug shape, pretty much all three wire servos are compatible with current receivers. Everyone uses compatible wiring now.

Not all receivers have the slot for a Futaba J plug but it can be removed easily. The opening on Sanwa receivers is a little tighter than most, requiring slight trimming of other brands plugs.

Would the 1995ish vintage Airtronics servos that are already in the car work with the radio you recommended? Would it be crazy to run 30-year-old servos in a nitro in your opinion? I do worry about runaways a bit to be honest. I am thinking I might be better off getting the ones you mentioned on Amazon. You have been such a help. Thank you.

Not without changing the plugs and wiring pinout. IMHO, not worth the trouble. Airtronics didn't switch to the Z plug until later.

Those are notorious for causing problems. The spring loaded contacts can be a problem when you fasten the unit down. I would highly recommend using a proper receiver pack. These 6v rechargable packs are cheap and work well.

Also don't use a switch. Just an extension. Plug it in to use it, unplug when done. Switches are a common source of runaway. These are the ones I use.

Gotcha. Thank you for the recommendation. What do I use to charge the battery pack? All I have is a Traxxas charger right now for lipos. It has the Traxxas plugs on it of course.

Pretty much any charger other than Traxxas will do almost all batteries, something like this.... And yes it's ac/dc

Is the plug on this compatible for the type of reviewers/servos I will be using?

Not likely. That looks like a JST plug ( your Airtronics receiver might have used it). Every modern receiver I've seen used the same plug as the servos. Many refer to them as a universal plug, which is basically a JR/Hitec plug.
