Force .12S .... What's inside?

Post by RC10th »

I picked up a brand new Force .12S for $99 which is a pretty cheap engine here, it equates to about $10 bucks usd with the current conversion rate.

This engine will go into a RC10GT runner to replace the CV-R currently in it.

What's inside? Let's take a look.

Standard Force pull start and a German one way bearing. The backplate is interesting as is does not have a bronze bushing for the starting shaft but does have an o-ring seal for the backplate and one to seal the starting shaft. Another interesting thing to note is the backplate can be mounted in two different positions.

The engine head is quite nice and has a head button, fairly nice features for a budget engine.

The internals look nicely made. The crank is fairly basic and looks very similar to the OS crank. It also has an o-ring seal which seals against the front bearing. The sleeve is ABC construction and features 3 ports. The piston and rod look well constructed. Funnily enough it looks a lot like a smaller version of the Force .21 engines. It should be a pretty good performer.

Be extremely careful not to lose the little starting pin and spring,

Normally you'd cut the crank with a sandwich bag while the engine is assembled but I decided to cut it while out. I have a few Associated cut off nuts somewhere but do you think I could find them? I ended up using a dubro collar that fit quite well. To be honest you don't need a cut-off nut if you know what you're doing, just be careful you don't cut it too short.

I put tape around it just to protect it, I always touch up the cut end with a linishing belt to make it appear a little nicer.

The carb seems well made except for the rubber boot which looks and feels a little cheap. Two o-rings seal the carb to the engine case, another nice feature.

Clutch time.....

MIP 4-n-1 clutch which was the best clutch back in the day, much better then trimming the stock AE shoes. This flywheel is a litte worse for wear cosmetic wise but since it's on a runner it doesn't really matter.

All ready to go into the GT.

This has non pull engine mounts, non pull flywheel and a pullstart header. This pullstart is much smaller than the OS so it's way more compact. I may still buy a non pull back plate to replace the pull start.

I did forget to rotate the fuel nipple

As you can see even with non pull start mounts the pullstart hangs down minimally (<1mm), quite acceptable in my opinion.

Same same but different....

The most interesting thing is the carb throat is slightly smaller. Hopefully this means the engine is a raging fire breathing beast and needs the smaller carb to tame it down

There are some slight differences but nothing anyone would care about  I still need to cut the crank then it can go in the truck
