JRXT of my youth

Post by sixdub »

I received a JRXT for Christmas in 1990 to partner the JRX2 I received the year before. I'm pretty sure that my folks bought it at Arcar South, a hobby shop not far from my home in Georgia. Arcar hosted the 1990 Kyosho 1/8 Offroad Challenge. A JRXT was on the cover of the RCCA July 1990 issue that also included the Kyosho Challenge race report - that issue sparked my interest in getting JRXTs.

The day after Christmas, the family piled into the family truckster (83 Marquis Wagon) and headed to my grandparents in Oklahoma. I sat in the back of the wagon and built the JRXT along the way. 8)

Once back home, I sprayed the body, installed some HPI super star wheels, and used the stairs as a photo booth.

Over the years, I put a bunch of miles on the truck and modified it various ways, including a Pro SE chassis with RPM truck arms in its final form. I gave the chassis to a nephew several years ago, but kept the original body, which I recently dug out of my parents garage.

It's in pretty sad shape.

I decided to attempt to clean up the body and see if it could look decent on the shelf.

I removed some of the extraneous decals and hit some of the worst curb rash with 1000 grit sand paper.

Then I applied some PlasticX polishing compound and buffed it with a rotary buffer.

Looks pretty decent.

I dug out my decal stash and went to work covering the extra holes in the body.

Added some number plates and a spolier.

Yup - a fairly early truck.
The NIP wheels reveal a part of the plan... :D

Ditto! It's nice to find some time to work at the bench and swing by here.

I'm trying to get my original chassis back from my nephew, but we are both busy with young kids and haven't connected yet. So, I'll use a "place holder" for the time being.

I've had this low mile chassis on the shelf for years and decided to give it attention.

20250118_140426.jpg

It has an aftermarket battery box that required chassis milling to fit. Sad trombone. (What brand is it?)

I also found one of the original HPI wheels. Sad shape.

20250118_140606.jpg

I've been thinking about this project for a while and had sourced some NIP wheels recently.

20250118_140636.jpg

I stripped the chassis, removed the steering servo that was epoxied in place, and buffed the graphite plate.

20250208_151520.jpg

Cleaned up the suspension pieces, drained the shocks for shelf duty, etc.

20250208_160958.jpg

Back together. I have some nylon 4-40 nuts on order to replace the stained ones on the rear shock mounts.

Had some time to dig in the stash. Lookee what I found. A battery box attached to a JRX2 and a loose one.

20250215_100959.jpg

Also found some white steering arms to match what I had on my OG truck. Should clean up fine.

20250215_100218.jpg

Rear tires will be NIP X-patterns and fronts will be lightly used stock ribs.

20250118_140705.jpg

Cleaning the mold release off.

20250127_150309.jpg

And mounted up.

Motor options. I did not have Losi motors back in the day. Mostly, I had Trinity Monster Horsepower or B&R, as that is what the local hobby shops had in stock.

This is what I had in there BITD. Need a pinion and a few misc screws to call it done (for now).

My OG JRXT has come back to me. A bit worse for wear, but complete. I'll clean it up and maybe make a runner out if it.
