do stock and modified endbells have same diameter?

I was tinkering with some extra parts and happened to try fitting a stock endbell on a modified motor can and was surprised to find it doesn't fit... The endbell had just slightly too large diameter to fit. I tried another modified can I had lying around and found the same thing. I'd never considered this before and was curious whether this is typical, or just a chance with the particular stock endbell I tried?

I'm not sure whether the endbell diameter is different between stock and mod, or the mod can may have thicker steel? I'll have to measure these next time I disassemble some motors.

Just chance.

I have an early Speedworks mod can with a P2K endbell and arm, works fine.

I also have a Yokomo mod can with a MVP endbell and arm, also works fine.

I have motors with mixed and matched cans and endbells that also work. Different brands.

On your stock endbell, does it happen to be one with a timing tab? Those tabs won't work with a mod can.

There are indents on the sides of vintage Yoke mod cans that are not on stock cans. The indents stop the metal ring inserts, that the end bells screws onto, from coming out. Also I may be remembering wrong but stock endbells are longer than mods so the indents in a mod can will stop a stock endbell from seating all the way in.

Thanks for this -- I checked another stock endbell and found exactly what you described. No tabs on these ones, but I do know what you're referring to.

Yes I noticed this also on a different endbell -- it's deeper and that depth will interfere with the metal ring held in place by the can indents. However the first endbell one I was looking a happened to be thin similar to a modified one.

In the end it just seems I have slightly different sizing between parts from different manufacturers.
