A&L Custom Team Truck #4 of 5 or 6

Post by RPMfieldtester »

Hi all...adding this here because there are others already posted in this section...Daryl Lane gave this truck to me, his last personal truck, a few weeks before he passed in 2021. As such, I can see his touches throughout and it took me some time to get to working on it. As it currently sits, there are no electrics installed since it is going on the shelf but that may change in the future.
I got started in R/C when the first RC10 came out. Seemed like everything before it was more toy based. I raced weekly at the Ranch Pit Shop and made many upgrades including Hot Trick wide front end kit and a Novak T4 speed control. I wanted to upgrade the rear suspension with a cool looking A&L trailing arm kit and transmission but couldn't afford the very expensive kit. I instead opted for the much cheaper MIP swing arm kit which worked ok for the primitive times. Eventually I got burned out and quit racing...until the stealth trans versions of the RC10 came out and I was back at it.
That is about when I met Daryl. We met racing at the local tracks, raced for several years at Breakaway and MnM raceways. It was during this time, before the 10T came out, that Daryl had started working on the A&L truck "conversion" kit based partially on the successful A&L buggy kit. These trucks looked like spaceships compared to the other "truck conversion" kits at the time and I always admired them and the way they worked. But sadly, once the 10T and LXT trucks came out, the "conversion" market was dead.
For several years, a small group of us would meet for dinner after races. During these BS sessions, we would discuss how to promote and "fix" R/C and joke about that particular night's racing or lack thereof. One of my favorite topics to tease Daryl with was how expensive at the time the A&L kit was for a starving wannabe racer and how cool they (truck and buggy) looked...this teasing went on for the entire 35+ years we were friends. I miss my friend, his truck is a great reminder of how we met and became lifelong friends...rest in peace my friend...

When I first saw the A&L trailing arm upgrade, I was racing off road cars out in the deserts of baja and the southwest. I really liked the way it worked and felt it was superior to anything available at the time. Later, I got to see Chris Allec's prototype full car in action and was in awe and the beautiful chassis, just looked on another level compared to everything else so I have admired the cars and trucks for a very long time...

I wish I could take credit for the paint but it was a spare body Daryl had and was never installed. Not sure who painted it, Chris may know. Adam Lane, Daryl's son, recently had a body painted to match and it looks great.
Here is an early pic probably for a magazine ad or from a trade show from back in the day...

That's a Booker painted body, and D'wayne Walter (DW designs https://www.facebook.com/DWalterDesigns) painted the tribute for Adam.

I figured it was a Booker paint job but wasn't totally sure and didn't see his signature on it like I had seen on others...and the DW designs body looks perfect!
