Take Two - Plan B Race Truck

Post by RC10th »

Since I turned the original Plan B truck into a near mint shelfer this will be the thread for its replacement.

This truck wasn't nearly as nice and had enough blue stuff to make Eiffle 65 happy. There won't be much blue on it when it's done, just the chassis plates and possibly a thumb screw. This should be a pretty quick build as I already had the truck mocked up in its previous form. Just waiting on a few parts to arrive from the good ol US of A before I can physically finish it.

Not a bad start..

Front end mostly together, nothing too exciting. Just polished up the grubby front axles, grubby king pins and the likes. A few go fast goodies include an early Associated carbon tower, silver aluminium screws, FT titanium turnbuckles and titanium hinge pins.

I also did the bearing upgrade and locked out the servo saver as much as it would go. I couldn’t physically get it to seperate with as much force as I could apply with my bare hands so I figure it's solid enough. I was originally going to use dust covers for nostalgia but I was surprised at just how much drag they put on the steering, plus they look like crap after one run so I left them off.

Front end pretty much finished, everything is extremely free and smooth.

Rear arms hubs etc installed. Pretty standard fare, CVD's, ceramic bearings, titanium turnbuckles, titanium hinge pins.

It looks like I forgot to remove one dust shield.... it's gone now, lol.

Transmission time....

Old grey idler and ceramic bearings

7075 aluminum top shaft to lighten the rotational load, and since I bought the wrong slipper eliminator I had to drill a new hole in the top shaft.

Slipper eliminator fits well and is pretty minimalistic.... The diff had a full rebuild and was given some ceramic balls. The trans spins super free and should offer good power delivery.

I had to space the tower forward a little for some extra clearance when using 12mm springs and maintain proper shock angle.

It's a semi-roller.... still waiting for shocks to arrive before it will stand on it's own feet.

Standard Team shocks, 12mm springs with custom machined collars from my good friend Chris and gold shafts.

I'm not so sure these 12mm springs are all that good as when I used to race with them they had a tendency to lose ride height as the ambient temperature would rise. Everyone raved about the Kyosho springs back then but good luck finding them here let alone a full set, so I'll make due with what I can get.

I'm also still trying to find one gold 1.02 shock shaft that doesn't cost $30us plus $25 shipping. I bought a pair of gold shafts that were listed as gold from someone and they ended up sending me one gold and one ubnobtanium. I've also tried to buy one from two different people/shops and they both refunded my money  I'll eventually find one.....

Nice. The 13mm springs are very nice ans never change just in case you go that route later. Pics of those collars when you can! I have some CW collars that fit over mine to work

The collars are just simple adaptors machined out of nylon, same as the AE ones, nothing fancy, just larger. I forgot I also have these higher frequency 12mm springs which I may use instead....

The unobtainium shafts I have for my TC3 are all gold. I wonder is someone tampered with that 1.02 shaft package.

Nope, the B4/T4 era stuff came in a bluish unobtanium color too. (My T2.4 has one of each on it lol)

Shocks finally arrived for this, I think I had a bit of a win too as I believe the shocks were originally off an FT truck as they have unobtanium shock shafts. I can live with that, lol. The shocks were pretty cheap too and look new.

I still need to rebuild them but they look good. The big dilemma is to stick with the kit 30wt or drop the rear down to 25wt to compensate for the lighter shorty batteries.
