GreenBar0n wrote: Thu Aug 29, 2024 3:14 pm Thanks! I'm an IT subcontractor and I work from home, so in between jobs I have the time to build; whether it was vintage guitar amp clones, or restoring early 70's Marantz stereo's, if I have to sit here, I like to be productive. That's the reason for so many RC models lately, that and I don't have any car payments, or gas budget, so I have a bit of disposable income.

I did see that 356, but the decals aren't right, that seems to be the current trend, making a body resemble an iconic car, and then dodging copyright and trademark with horribad decals. Tamiya, HPI, and Kyosho are the only bodies I like these days because of how correct to scale they are, and their proper decals; the knock offs are like this VW DC body, not great.

The Kyosho 4252 is exactly the kind of RC models I'm looking for these days.
That's a gig I can dig. :D

Some of the aftermarket drift car bodies are really impressive, but I agree, when it comes to lexan done right, I don't think anyone can beat Tamiya or Kyosho.
HPI has to be mentioned with Tamiya and Kyosho bodies, the HPI decals and window masks are pre-cut too.

HPI Firebird comes with decals for '76-'80, Smokey & the Bandit I was made in 1977, so the TA in the movie has the '76 body kit.

Tamiya requires serious trimming of decals and window masks, but that's how the details can be extra sharp, or really bad.

Special delivery from Japan, couldn't believe how fast this got here, the day after Labor Day even.
Image

Came with a sweet note that looks to be handwritten, and a miniature origami.
Image

I have bought vintage Boss guitar pedals from Japan in the past, and they also included origami.
Image

Thoughtful, and endearing, is not something I'm used to seeing every day :D. And this was the lowest price on ebay.

The aluminum center prop shaft will be here tomorrow, have the other upgrades.
Image

Really like Tamiya's presentation, even without the blister packs, everything is carefully separated for shipping.
Image

Most important parts for me, the wheels and body, have to start there.
Image

Window masks and decals are not pre-cut.

Decals give you two options.

All of the paint should be here tomorrow for the 911, and a couple more projects in the works.

At a fork in the road for this TT-02.
Image

This step in the build is where the wheelbase is selected. If I want to use this chassis for the VW DC body (260mm wb), I need to build it at the 257mm wb, L setting.
Image

The 911 body uses the 251mm wb, S setting. Tomorrow I need to decide if the 911 gets a better chassis like the TT-02R, or SRX at some point.

To my eyes, the Martini over silver was the worst Martini paint scheme. The silver seems to dull the stripes whereas the white base provided a great contrast. If those are the choices, I'd go with the street car.

 What?! Nuh uh... the Silver Martini scheme is awesome, and with the orange bumpers it's just a whole cup full of yes please.

This should be another great build. I'm definitely looking forward to watching this one come together. :D

FWIW, I also have that 911 body set but I'm still looking for the right wheels and tires; The body is a tiny bit large as compared to other 1/10 touring cars. Tamiya probably adjusted the scale a bit to make it fit the TT-02 chassis. Anyway, I think DS wheels might be exactly what the doctor ordered - maybe with custom printed Fuchs inserts. Of course, If I had a printer, none of this would be a problem.

I want to attempt to re-create this Singer:

So many projects, so little time. :?

Now I'm wishing I had more than one of these 911 bodies, so I could do a few different ones.

The only thing I don't like about this body is the holes are already drilled, even the antenna hole in the roof that no one uses any longer :x, this rules out using it for other chassis's.

When I was 10 or 11, my neighbor had the cleanest silver 911, looked like the one above. I remember learning how to 'ghost ride' an old BMX bike, where you step off the back of it and let the bike keep going. Must've set a record that day, because my ghost ridden bike traveled three houses down, and turned at the last moment, and went handle bars first in to the side of his pristine silver 911 . Turns out he worked for State Farm insurance, and somehow he wasn't as angry as I would've been.

The ghost rider was a 1978 Huffy Bandit, like this one (Smokey & the Bandit theme bike):

If the decals were green, there would be no choice for me, I'd do this instead of the red:
Image

Going boxart Silver on the Tamiya 911 body, was thinking about Bright Gun Metal instead; will have to grit my teeth and push on through when that PS-20 fluorescent red goes on, red and pink are not for me, boxart gets a pass sometimes. My Frog in '85 was painted Green and White, no pink pass was issued back then.

Will setup the TT-02 wheelbase for 257mm, or the Long setting. Want to see if the VW DC body will ever clear the rear wheel skirts, if it won't, I'll build a shelf display chassis (wheels on a coat hanger rod or similar) and forget the VW body altogether.

Paint is now said to be arriving Monday.

Yeah, I hate when they punch holes in the body. I understand they are trying to make assembling the kit easier for us but I like to use alternatives to body posts - i.e. inverted posts, magnets, etc.
The 911 body set doesn't have holes.

Very cool, thanks for that! That gives me some ideas. Have to do the silver boxart on this kit body, but would like another body to make custom.

Got the wheels on before anything else was done. Chassis set to 257mm wb, High ground clearance setting.
Image

With 26mm wide rear wheels, the DC rear skirts clear without any rubbing, done. Would really like the Chrome 31mm wheels in the rear.
Image

Image

I guess now I'm saving my pennies for a TT-02S or SRX, for the 911 at the 251mm wb setting. Will buy this a cheap HW 1060 and use the included motor, and use magnetic body posts like the other Bus's.

Tried the 31mm wide wheels in the rear, they rub. Put the correct 26mm wide rear wheels on, and it's a perfect fit.
Image

Can slam it on the ground and it still clears the chassis and wells.
Image

Think I'm going to get rid of the window decals, they don't look scale.
Image
Need to put the magnetic body posts in next, and then finish the steering and electronics when the parts arrive.

Got the 911 Fuchs masked.
Image

The spokes will be TS-17 Aluminum Gloss, when the TS-29 Semi-Gloss fully dries.
Image

Going to get the 911 body masked off for painting. Hope I don't run out of paint this time.

 I've run out of paint so many times now, and it takes about 8 days to get a single can of paint here, because it has to be ground shipped. Now I just stock up on the colors I know I'll need again; the shipping is a killer after a while, buying can by can.

TS-17 Gloss Aluminum ready, and spokes masked.

Results.

A bit of masking tape bleed.
Image

Use X-18 and a brush to tighten up the black.
Image

Will let these dry until tomorrow, and assemble them.

I masked the wrong side of the front rims yesterday, and sprayed them :x

Had to remove all of the TS-29 off the backside hoop of the front wheels, and then mask and spray them correctly. The directions are a bit vague.
Image

Going to cut out the 911 body and hopefully paint it today.

Will mask the windows and bumpers first, spray the entire shell PS-12 Silver, then peel the bumpers and spray them PS-20 Fluorescent Red, then back it all with PS-1 White.

Last night from Amain, ordered a HW 1060 for the VW DC TT-02, and a TT-02R kit for the 911, should be here Wednesday.

Going to mask off the bumpers and try to paint today.

PS-12 Silver backed in PS-1 White, overspray film still on until the windows are tinted tomorrow, in PS-31 Smoke.

Hoping that PS-20 Flo Red grows on me, boxart gets a pass either way.
