Very cool! As a product of the 80's myself, I've always had a soft spot for C4 Vettes (and 3rd gen F bodies.. story for another time!), and feel like they've always been quite underappreciated. Good for guys like us, though... as it makes them VERY affordable now! :wink:

I dunno... I just think they're cool. Open the hood and the first thing you see is those wide front tires and the trick looking aluminum A arms and suspension... and the TPI motors looked cool sitting in there, too imho. All in all, I think they're a GREAT bargain for performance vs price. I suppose they didn't really "excite" the market too much with their power numbers (which is pretty easily fixed for someone with a bit of wrenching ability), and when they introduced the ZR-1, the price tag hurt too much! It was literally TWICE the price of a 350TPI Vette

fwiw... the last place I worked at restored primarily Corvettes (from straight up "turds" to NCRS quality trailer queens), and we had the "first off the line" C4 ZR-1 in storage, along with 2 other ZR-1s that were raced at some events in '90/'91 and had cages in them (and all the other "racecar accoutrements"). The first one was of course, all factory original, and it was pretty surreal feeling when you looked at the vin behind the windshield, and it said 0001 at the end of it! :shock: I got to see AND drive a lot of RARE stuff there. My boss also owned a '71 ZR-1 convertible... Out of 8 total ZR-1s made in '71, his was the only 'vert! Supposedly that one's worth a whole bunch of dollar bills.

Soooo.... What's the deal with that Chevette? :D I see that it has some equipment that would suggest it's likely not powered by the original 1.4 or 1.6L anymore...

My First car was a very clean ‘87 Monte Carlo SS. In good condition they’re $15k+. Another one I want to replace was my ‘91 Camaro Z28, good condition those are also $15k+. Never owned a Corvette and they are a better deal so I decided to go with one of them.

Originally a 351 Cleveland 2v barrel car (H code), 302 wasn't an option in '69 and '70 for the Mach 1. But it does have a 302 with small(ish) cam, long tubes, Holley 4v, Edelbrock Performer. Supposedly has forged pistons, but the motor runs so darn good it doesn't matter to me. Story is the Cleveland was pulled some time in the '70s for racing purposes and replaced with the 302. Guy I bought it from took the car over in 1984 per the title.

I wouldn't sweat it. 2V Clevelands aren't what people make them out to be.

They have oil distribution problems. The valves have a weird, failure prone lock design. And the large open chamber heads are very prone to detonation.

A stock late 90's Explorer 302 with a stock 5.0 Mustang cam will run circles around it and do it for many more miles.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

Right, 4V Clevelands were far better heads wise. Don't know off the top of my head if the bottom ends differed between the 2V and 4V, with the exception of the R-code blocks having 4 bolt mains.

I was actually more bummed that it didn't have a 351W.

The oiling problem can be addressed, if you know how.

Australian versions had different cylinder heads that had closed chambers. Bad valves and lock design still applies.

Oh yeah, we still used a couple variations of it in trucks into the 80's.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

In a perfect world, every vehicle I own would have a 351W. Except the GSXR, obviously :lol: As it is, I only have the one 351W, in my Pinto, and its little brother, a 331, in my Comet.

Indeed. I suppose a pair of AFR195 heads would take care of any insecurities I'd have with the 302 :lol:

In a twist of fate, the shop I was storing my Father/Son VW project at called and we needed to pull it out ASAP. Looks nice next to the Magnum, but man, we have some work ahead of us.

I had a great time building a Baja Bug with my son when he was in High school. We made some incredible memories and built a set of lifelong skills.

What year is your Squareback? I'm in process of a Husband/Wife 1969 Squareback project at the moment...
