I'd definitely be interested to see the chain guide when it's all done.. I hope you'll post here!

Yeah, sorry - I noticed that soon after I posted this. I never ordered anything from Shapeways before. I'm probably not going to be building it for a while, but when I finally get to it I'll definitely be looking to buy one of these. Possibly for my original Fantom as well if I decide to actually run it. I still find it hard to believe that the original design worked so well - and even that the new one is so fast even with the chain routed the way it is. Nice job putting that together!

The files for the parts are on cults3D: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/fantom-ep-4wd-ext-accessories-for-chassis
I did thought about Shapeways, but since it bankrupted, there is no point to put the parts there. And to be very honest I never liked Shapeways, as they were probably the most expensive printer service online...

Ah, thanks for clarifying ... I didn't realize there was a separate vendor required; never ordered a 3D print job before. I stupidly wired it so my battery leads are on the chain side, so I was happy to see there's a version that covers that.

If you don't have one handy, no worries.. but I'd really like to see a video of it running through the guide. Just for kicks, I was wondering about the feasibility of printing one in aluminum...from what I can tell, Google says it's possible :D Have you ever done that?

Well, yes, technically it is possible to 3D print in metal... But here I would advise here to prefer plastic :any metal (aluminium included) will add a lot of weight. Further, the finish of metal print is nowhere near from CNC machined parts. Last, I'm not sure adding metal near battery leads is a good idea...

Last comment, the way I did the parts, you may put the battery leads the side you want. On the original Fantom, I installed them on the chain side because the steering servo was on the other side. On the EXT version, I thought it was better to put the leads on the other side to avoid messing with the cable near the chain : A chain can act as a chain saw and cut the leads by rubbing against the cables, and with Lipo, that would mean fire risk. Leads are set on the left side for this reason.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that! In my mind's eye I was thinking about a golden aluminum version to match the parts on the 60th... I have enough Fantom runners (and likely nowhere to drive them now that the last on-road track near me just closed :( ) so I think that one will probably stay on the shelf...
Smart thinking to consider all of those possibilities; sounds like it'll make sense for me to get one for my OG Fantom as well. Have you designed any other parts for old school Kyosho 1/12 cars? I have honestly been blown away by the response to these re-res & the fact that Kyosho released this car in the first place. I thought I was one of about 10 people left who even cared about these old cars.

I designed parts as well for the first re-release Fantom, and I intend to do the same for the Plazma (I have a Kyosho Plazma LM here, which I will need to take care at some point)... If ever I come to put my hands on other original models, I may do something about them. All about this is having the luck to put my hands on a car, and more often than not, it is about money, and that means limited to what I can allocate to my hobby activity. If you like what I do and are willing to contribute to my projects, you may contribute (my paypal is on my cults3D page).

My Fantom ran on Sunday. At some point I handed my remote to one of the guys of the club to take a quick video... There was another Fantom (non EXT) on the track at the same time...

That’s really fast - do you have speed reading on it?

Thanks limestang

No speed reading, but fast enough! Details on the two Fantoms :
Fantom EXT : Motor is 21.5T, pinion 21T, LipoHV
Fantom non EXT : motor is 21.5T, pinion 22T, Lipo

The non EXT motor was hotter at the end of the runs, while mine run cold. No real difference in the straight line on the top speed.

I ran inti an issue building mine where the front springs bind betweend the steering blocks and the A arm, preventing smooth steering movement. Has anyone else run into this?

I did not experienced issues. Make sure the washer is on the top of the steering block, and the orientation of the spring (smaller side is on top of the washer)...
