Overspray film

I have had 5 or 6 Schumacher wings in a row with the overspray film on the side where I normally paint. On the first one I thought someone must have loaded the lexan into the press upside down by mistake. Then I got another, and another, and another....

History tells me that there is an idiot in every crowd, and more often than not, it is me, so....what am I missing? Why is the film on the bottom of the wing? Do people prefer to have the side skirts look nice and shiny at the expense of the top side of the wing being dull? That is the only reason I can think of to justify painting the top side of the wing.

From the pic, it looks like it is on the outside. Like, if I were looking down on it. I think most of them are painted underneath so they look shiny. I do anyway. I may be missing something myself, since I'm usually the idiot in the crowd. Don't try to take my spot!

I paint wings on the bottom and usually have to remove the film.

I think most of the time, they do wings on a form with a bodyshell as well, in which case the overspray film would be on the detail side of the lexan sheet, and not the flat side. As such, the wing would be the same deal, with the overspray on the 'top' or detail side, which would be the bottom of the wing itself. If you ever see the old Cat or Cougar lexan body sheets, with all the various lexan parts molded into the one sheet, my clunky words would make sense

The default is to have film side opposite of mold side.

This is just speculation but I think if they did it with the film facing the mold it would likely come off when they pull the part from the mold.

I haven't seen that, but I get what you mean. I have seen those lexan rear hub dust shields for the Top Cat, Cougar, ProCAT...

OK, I guess the wings are fine and it is just me. I thought maybe Schumacher knew I crash a lot, and so they inverted the process to make my cars look better when lying upside down.

So...on a related note, how do you guys clean overspray from the top side of your wings? I tried brake cleaner once...

Just flip your wing over. Problem solved.

I normally use white masking tape, as it still gives you a visual reference for even coverage.

I tried cling wrap on my last wing. I wouldn't cling. I ended up just being careful with my spray direction.

I ended up just being careful with my spray direction.

I have tried this a few times, and fail badly at it each time! It just seems to always get on the topside no matter what. It is usually light though, so a quick wipe of Nitro takes it right off. I now go masking tape, 2" around the edges, and the big 6" roll for filler.
