Brushed motor diode/cap/???

School me on the need and “how to” for a diode? Cap? Not sure what it’s called that was added to a brushed motor back in the day. I think it was to reduce radio interference? Still needed today?

Caps were used either in a pair or trio for motor noise. Not needed on modern radios. Shottkey diode was only used with forward only speed controls to assist with braking.

For recreations of older cars, yes, still needed ........... for looks.

For any functional purpose with modern radios, nope.

You guys put modern radios in vintage cars? Eww.

Most of my stuff still uses 27 and 75mhz AM radios. Using modern stuff just doesn't feel right.

And while I do have a fairly large collection of vintage transmitters, most of my runners use a Futaba T2PL, JR XR2i, or Airtronics MX-A (also have a Kyosho variant), which I have 2 or 3 of each. The XR2i is probably my favorite, it just feels right.

Yeah I’ll be using a modem remote for my JRxT runner with a modern Hw ESC and 13.5 so no worry’s there, but still looking for a Reedy Mr A or B for my RC10T so will want that to be correct-ish looking…

Not a purist and neither are exact replicas so don’t care for the old radios hahahaha

Maybe I shouldn’t have said that, I hope you guys will still answer my dumb questions?

Well, modern radios are technically safer for old cars, nothing worse than a bad glitch or runaway which causes you to break something rare, hard to find and expensive....

Not all motors required a Schottky unless it was mentioned in your esc manual. The caps (not diodes) were typically .1 uF ceramic disc and you used two. Some esc's wanted you to use 3. Some kits had an electrolytic or tantalum cap.
