Again another Marui project : Super Wheelie and Big Bear!

@Dadio, as you mentioned it yesterday, I was talking about this with someone... I even took a picture of it...


My thoughts : The designer who made it probably thought that 40 years after him someone would tried to model it in CAD and decided to give him some hard time

Anyway, I decided to cheat, as mentioned earlier... I put a lid on the toolbox and identified it clearly. This car is going to go fast with my improved gears, so there is a fair reason to put a lid on the toolbox


Then, moved to the seats... They are challenging, somehow... Did simplified them, in a similar way than what I did for the Land Cruiser... There is always a way to do better, but i DId not want to spend too much time for it... That being said, thinking now, I may have done this in Surface mode perhaps in an easier way...


Added the last details : blinkers, room for the windshield fixation, hole for the gear lever and the switch...


And here it is on the chassis...


There is still some parts to do to complete the shell : the dasboard, the windshield. Most of the accessories are common to the Land Cruiser: I identified one difference : the spare wheel is not fully covered like on the Land Cruiser...
That's my next steps for this afternoon, probably in parallel to some Nichimo test prints...

Nice solution , that's really looking good , hate to think how much support it would need to print but thank the gods that supports have been so dramatically improved in the last few years , when I started 3d printing the amount of support and the difficulty in removing it from a print like that would have really put me off , now though it's so different , yesterday when I removed the Holiday Buggy chassis from the bed it left the support behind neat as you like , in the old days it would have been an hour's work to remove with the risk of damaging the print being pretty high .

See, I'm not even sure I'll print this one... Or maybe I'll do a black one. I don't know... Or a blue Land Cruiser... It's not like the 44B City where I have to print a body at least: for the Super Wheelies and Big Bear, it's a chassis that is missing ...

As for the support, I also saw some improvements over time... To the point I'm not sure anymore solvable support would be needed for most of my use cases : it leads me to think printer differently, and I'm starting toying with the idea of another printer, and the idea to keep my Ender 5 Plus for the big prints requirement, but with a mod to make it direct drive rather than bowden (but that's another topic, I'll set a 3DPrinting stuff thread myself when I'll come to order the next printer, which I'm now almost fixed on what it will be...).

I converted to a E3d v6 and ruby nozzle at the same time. I would highly recommend it and if you do go that route let me know and I’m happy to provide you my custom files.

I've always wanted to ask; what is the most complex and challenging single part you've ever modeled?

I surface-modeled a CC-01 chassis tub recently and it was a real bear.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I have switched 3 of my 6 machines to Orbiter 2.0’s and on my ender 5 plus it made by far the biggest difference. I used to hate that machine, now it’s my go-to. I converted to a E3d v6 and ruby nozzle at the same time. I would highly recommend it and if you do go that route let me know and I’m happy to provide you my custom files.

Jeff, I take note... I'll probably revemp that Ender 5 plus, because I agreed with my wife for a dedicated place for the printer(s). I'm looking for a second one as for most of the uses I don't need a bed so big, and I really need to be able to print material more demanding... I've look at the different options, and it is a project by itself, and what blocks me currently, is that I still need the printer time to time, so I can not block it for upgrades... So the plan is really to have a second machine more capable out of the box... And a Resin printer as well (I initially set my mind on something, but changing mind, and within the same budget, there is more possibilities )...

Well, Doug, , each time i do something new in terms of difficulties there is some challenges... I believe the right way to approach the thing is to observe and look at it by asking what is the easiest way to achieve it... And then in terms of difficulties, if I quote 1 to 5, bodyshells are often close to the later, while for the chassis, it all depens some are very simple (the Big Bear chassis is part of those), and some maybe go up to four... But for most of the chassis which are difficut, it is mainly the measurements that are hard... Sometimes you have to do assumptions, and when you do, you better be coherent with the assumption done, as when it become a certainty, you need to be able to change it without affecting the rest, and this is where it is difficult, because sometimes you have no other choice but to do an assumption...

Anyway, I'm going back to the dashboard of this Jeep which is quite complex... The mould should have cost a fortune to do...

Not to derail the thread further but the Samurai chassis was by far and away the hardest , mostly due the the measuring of the original being so hard .

Not to derail the thread further but the Samurai chassis was by far and away the hardest , mostly due the the measuring of the original being so hard .

I remember the Samurai chassis you made Dadio – the results look amazing! That one would have me pulling my hair out.
Probably not quite the same but, so far the CC-01 has been my Mt Everest. The tooling for that part must have cost Tamiya a fortune to make - nearly every part fastens directly to the tub so there are screw bosses and holes everywhere.

Oh yes, I agree body shells can be especially tough to model unless one has access to a 3d scanner – which I don’t. Some bodies can be mainly free-form sculptures which require many assumptions and trials until it begins to look right. I think the Kyosho TOMS body definitely falls into that category. I gave up on that one.

Doug, don't worry, if I post here and on other forums it is also to generate discussions... Specially if it is in the interest of knowledge of everyone in terms of 3D Printing or car modelling... But I will carry on

After my last post, I moved over to next complex part : the dashboard... The structure is different from the Land Cruiser, and this time, I had it in hands (I still need to get the one from the Land Cruiser to be able to correct the model). There is a wall closing the bodyshell, and leaving room for the driver feets, and including the thransmission funnel...


A lot of details aalso...


This parts required 3 lofts... And therefore already 9 sketches just for those. Total 18 sketches...


Then I took care of the Windshield... Profile is right, as it matches the sketch on the screen... I corrected the weepers as the right one was too long and the left one was too short


After this being done, I got the accessory from the Land Cruiser and imported them... I noticed that the front of the roll cage is different as larger. The Land Cruiser one was glued and I did not bother modelling it in three parts. I had to redo it for the CJ-7. Which was quickly done, and I spotted a mistake I'll have to correct on the Land Cruiser cage (for which the Dashboard is not properly measured because I did not have it, and it supports the windshield). I sill have the spare wheel to modify to make it more CJ-7... But this is already nice this way...


I do have the intention of doing some rendering of those cars all together... But not for now

All coming together nicely , a little trick I discovered by accident when printing headlights , if you leave them as hollow domes and print with transparent filament then the support material adds the lense effect .

But why oh why did you gave me this idea ?
The black CJ-7 bodyshell is slightly damaged (nothing than can be reapaired with a new bodyshell, some plasticine and some ABS melted with acetone), and it came with led buckets in the front lights. If I print one of those bodyshells, I'll modify it to include some led buckets and lights... Which means additional design work . Initially, when I saw this, I was thinking about removing it and rebuild the area to get it back to its original form...Not so sure anyway, now

There was two versions of the SuperWheelies with the CJ-7 bodyshell...

One was white, and one was black... The white had black arms, while the black had red arms...






I'm quite sure the Black with red arms was faster

And another chassis family picture...



It's incomplete : there was Land cruiser with blue bodyshell, and additionally, I believ that one of the Super Wheelies had some grey arms, but I'm not fully sure which it was...
