Javelin makeover

Can't really remember when I got this car, been a while.
Unfortunately I have non if the pics from when I got it.
Not attempting the ultimate Javelin build, just bringing it back to life with lots of elbow grease and some new parts.

It was in typical, build the car and never do any maintenance until it breaks, shape originally.
First few pics are maybe 10-20% completed and a lot of parts cleaned.


Here are most of the parts after a good cleanup
Tires and wheels cracked and garbage
Replacing the hardware with stainless. Original screws were rusted and the heads boogered up from using wrong screw driver.

Not too much work on the aluminum, mostly wet sanded to 1000 grit.
Shocks were cleaned, shafts polished, new orings and oil.

Rebuild the diff and trans, New bearings in diff and hubs.
The gearbox is hiding an ugly secret that I will deal with as soon as a few parts roll in.

The Javelin is such a nice car , really not that interested in the optima strangely .

Most of the original screws/parts etc. that probably won't go back on the car
Into a container and stashed for future rebuilds.

The red anodized aluminum "brace" was used in lieu of the correct front bumper support.
This also meant bending the front under guard, it was trashed anyways.

Hoping this pile of old parts doesn't grow too much larger.

I have gotten a few parts in recently. Missed getting a pic of the new gear boxes. Kyosho (Optima 2016) Gear Box OT202

The rear gear box was hiding an ugly surprise.

From the TOMSE build....

The bearing size in the new gear boxes has been increased to 15mm OD, original bearing is14mm OD.
But the new bearing ID for the new diff is now 10mm. The original bearing ID is 8mm.
There does not appear to be a bearing that is 8mm ID and 15mm OD.

So I started hunting for shim material... aluminum, brass ????
I saw Tecno actually makes a plastic bearing adapter, but not in the correct size.
So lexan was a thought.
The very first piece I picked up was .5mm, voila!
Cut and trimmed a piece of lexan and the 8x14x4mm original bearing fits beautifully.
It is as snug and flush as the larger 15mm x 10mm bearing when seated!!

The new rear gear box replacement went in pretty easily. I did need to shim the outdrive bearing however.
I did it just like I did the front gear box on the TOMSE.

I replaced the front gearbox.
Same procedure as with the rear gearbox,
A .5mm lexan shim around the bearing holds it nice and snug.
Replaced the front underguard that was bent and deeply scratched.
The underguard is almost a perfect match for the original and fits perfectly.

Added quite a few more parts to the chassis.
Tie rod ends are new but most other pieces, except the hardware, is still original.
Waiting on front bumper support.
Undecided on wheel/tire combo.

Bumper support arrived.
Added a servo.
Cleaned and shot the wheels until I make up my mind on what to eventually use.

I may start looking for a Futaba MC 112 B and drop it in where the servo for the MSC was originally.

Tried to use the Futaba MC 112 B and it was a no-go on the fitment.

I do have a Futaba MC 230 CR that is small enough and would work fairly well with a Kyosho 240ST.
The motor will be period correct and the ESC and receiver are later but small enough and all three are in excellent condition.

Great combination of electronics...great rebuild!!

Very nice Chuck! Especially the motor - it appears like new.

I've also found that fitting the ESC in a Javelin can be a challenge. I'm running brushless and a Reedy SC600 does fit directly behind the battery after I've removed the fan.
I also have a Futaba MC 230 but it's in a trail truck at the moment. Seems to be a good reliable unit but, to be honest, I really haven't pushed it hard.

Anyway, nice work so far. Looking forward to the next update.

Doug, the motor almost looks almost new but that didn't stop me from a full cleaning., a spin in water, polishing the com, checking brushes and oil the bushings. The motor runs really well.
The ESC and receiver have never had the protective film on the logos removed and tbh I think they were new.
Been getting the car a bit closer this afternoon, pics to follow.

Really did not want to cut the ESC wires so "tie wrap and tuck" was the choice.
The drive figure will cover all the wiring anyways.
The driver figure may hurt the ESC's cooling so if run, the figure will probably be best left off.
