shock setups for dirt tracks

Post by JosephS »

I am in the rare position of having time to go to a track, a working car and a race to go to.
I'm going to take my rc10t to Hotrod Hobbies this Saturday and race. It's an outdoor dirt track. I have no idea what the surface will be like.

right now I am running 10mm a setup with #2 pistons front and rear along with 32.5 in the front and 30 weight oil in the rear. I have extra shock bodies and can prepare an alternate pair. I was thinking that this would let swap setup quickly. What would be a good combination as an alternate?

I have 1,2,3's available as well as a set of RPM 2 stage light pistons.

I'm hoping I can get in a practice day this week, but I may only have the hour before the race to shake things out. So a solid plan b on shocks will be good to have just in case.
Thanks all

Well, most people on here probably don't know what Track you are talking about
Your location in your profile or mentioning where the track is located might help.
Can't help if you are talking about Hot Rod Hobbies in Santa Clarita, CA.

It is the Hotrod in Santa Clarita, but they also just remade the track in early October. My initial setup is for that track but an older configuration. I am looking for some more general advice on a dirt track with a vintage stadium truck.

I was thinking about the #1 rear with 30 and #3 front with 35 as very different options, but that is a rough guess and not informed by anything.

Your base line is probably alright. Not really gonna know until you try it. The right tires are probably more important. Try and find out what the fast guys run before you even go there.

My recon on the track was that basically all the club running on t6.x

If my memory serves on those they are running proline holeshot tires front and rear. But every time I see a vintage dirt setup they are running front ribs and rear pins.

Right now I have the jconcept flips outs rear (pins)and carvers front(ribs). Is that just old fashioned or is that a better way to set up a rear motor truck?

Pins and ribs is not old fashioned if they work. All my stuff has pins and ribs for the track I'll be running next weekend. Though if it grooves up real well, you could probably go to an Ellipse Or Dirt Web style tire. But for my truck, I only have Carvers and Sprinters mounted up. So I'll be sticking with them.

Do you mean if the tracks gets more traction that it would make sense to move to those tires over ribs?

I'm sure that ribs 'work' since people ran them for decades. I'm trying to get the easiest to drive setup.

Since you already have #2 pistons in the front/rear maybe bring a #1 piston rear with 30 - 32wt and a #3 front with 30 - 32wt for some quick tuning options.
I was old school - when old school wasn't cool !
