Maybe there are not many modified Mabuchi motors out there. Beside the Black Mabuchi, which got a black can, front ball bearing and a more powerful wind.
But actually just something of a machine modified.
Maybe there have been no other Mabuchis which were "officially" modified by a motor builder.
Private modifications not counted.

MRP moved all of their motors from Igarashi to Mabuchi motors like the cans MG used....and they produced two, or three mod versions. A list of them can be found in the mid/late 80s catalogs: http://www.mrpboats.com/mrp-archive/mrp-catalogs/#

My first ever RC motor was actually a Mabuchi based MRP 550.

One of the other reasons i like the Mabuchi/Igarashi motors is that although they look a bit meh compared to what we consider to be performance, open endbell Yokomo-esq motors they actually can be tuned to perform well. Back in around 1988 our local RC Model Shop owned by Jimmy Davis actually offered their own standard motor... called the JDM 05R. Having seen them featuring in magazine tech charts in standard class competition, and then having raced again Jimmy's brother Wayne Davis when he visited our local off-road club (it was QUICK!) I decided to buy myself one. it remains one of the few motors from bitd that I cannot find - lost in the loft forever perhaps - but I am always on the lookout for another.

I presume from the name it was an Igarashi, but the dating suggests more Mabuchi. I will find one..... eventually!

Even Jimmy himself doesn't have one..... when I asked all he sent me was the photo of a motor label still stuck on to his wallet! He actually told me he sourced the motors directly from Mike Reedy.

Well that´s no surprise. Jim and Wayne Davis were Associated/Reedy team drivers.

Regarding MRP motors I personally prefere their Igarashi motors over the Mabuchi.
I just like the Igarashi look more than the Mabuchi.

Second, and I might open a can of worms here. There was a single motor builder who wound special armatures for other teams as well, for making his living. Especially for Worlds, Euros or similar high class events. This guy told me at some point, but it might be not known to the public and maybe should not. At least back in the days.
And if that armature looks very neat and different to what is usual for Reedy, it´s quite possible it´s one of the armatures I mentioned.

This have been interesting here lately and I have to try to open this worm can a bit: I do not want (necessary) to know who this mystic motor winder was but I would like to see a reference of two neat but different windings and maybe a bit information, if not clear enough from picture, what makes the difference.

I actually have a Reedy motor which was sent to me by Team Reedy, Yokomo and Associated driver Michael Ebert which is actually a bit of a one-off wind (for a Reedy at least), being a 15Triple. I will have to pop that open and check out the armature/windings.

Would a 15x3 be faster than a 15x1 or 2?

Faster or slower probably is the best answer. Similar but different.

Theoretically speaking, a single should have more low end power and motors with more winds (not turns) should have more high end power. However, it isn't unreasonable for a multiple wind of higher quality to make more power everywhere compared to a cheaper variant.

But when comparing completely different motors, you can probably throw most of that out the window. There are so many things that effect the power curve, narrowing down to one specific thing would be hard.

Oh okay thank you. Not very familiar with vintage brushed motors but I just picked up a Trinity 17x3 motor to try out
