870 "custom"
Hey guys. I just signed up. Thought I would share my 870c project.
Did a little reading here, the FB pages, and browsing Michael Vollmers builds and decided I wanted to build something up from parts.
Started with a YR-4 donor, using JC Racing repro arms, and a concoction of Kyosho and Tamiya parts to run hex hubs. I love the original style, but I already had some of these parts, and others were a bit easier to source thank yok' stuff. Hoping to use the car fairly frequently as a vintage racer.
The chassis plate and top deck are loaners, but I have some of my own on the way soon.
Excuse the brightly coloured anodized parts, probably strip those, but you get the idea.
This set up only needed one pair of spacers to work on the front, none on the back. uni -> outdrive looks about right so far. they're AE wheels, fronts are B6 offset (2wd). measures up 240mm outside to outside of the rims front and rear give or take a mm.

Re: 870 "custom"
Sounds cool. I might go for something like that for the 2nd one. I have been running playing with a Tamiya Top Force, and like this it's very light especially now I've fitted a shorty lipo, so I wanted see how this handles with the C cells.
Where did you get your arms? DS RC Classics?

Re: 870 "custom"
Fair bit of progress
I picked up my chassis plates, towers, etc on Sunday. Spent some time over the last 2 days doing the prep work of filing the chassis for arm clearance, and touching up the holes for the cells.
I spent today turning up the battery posts. Made from 8mm aluminium hex bar. About as simple as it gets for a lathe job, but still took quite a few hours.
Did also manage to make up the bumper from Kydex sheet, pretty happy with that for a first attempt.
As noted on their site, the JC Racing arms also needed to be shaved down a little, that's also done, so everything else should be pretty smooth sailing.
I am going to drop in to my local hobby shop and test fit a new front belt, HPI sprint 2 fitting, which is 169t, I have read on here that's a bit long but will have a look and see if it might work with a tensioner.
I will get them to solder the battery bars etc on, while I'm plenty confident enough to do it myself, while my soldering iron is decent, theirs is a beast.

Re: 870 "custom"
More today.
Batteries soldered.
New +10mm front tower I knocked up today. needed the height for the big bores, Turned out pretty neat.
New belts front and Rear, front is HPI sprint 2, rear is Destiny. Front belt is + 1, rear -1. These chassis plates are slotted for the motor mount, so managed to get this combo to work with a tensioner after some playing around.
I'll build a rear tower tomorrow, around +5mm. This one only works if I bolt the shock to the wing hole. It's definitely getting there now, probably do the electrics tomorrow too.

Re: 870 "custom"
The last piece of the puzzle arrived this week.
Got a chance to rough cut the body tonight, and have it sitting nicely. I had to shorten/re-solder the motor wires, quite tight in this area.
Got the rear tower done last week too, and took it for a little spin. With Just a few small adjustments on the TX, it drives quite well, very happy.
FYI wing is not permanent, just something spare to use for initial testing.

Re: 870 "custom"
Paint all done. Fairly satisfied with the results
Probably obvious to most people here, but basically the box art layout, but instead of red and white, metal flake (Tamiya lame flake) black over black with silver borders (semi-gloss silver anodized). Some "creative" use of some Masami flames, and few more modern Yokomo logos etc.
I am going to add some protection to the bottom of the under tray, as our track surface is super abrasive. I've been using automotive stone guard, which is pretty durable.
Also switched to some Bmax shocks. waiting on some hardware to properly finish them but they're functional as they are.

Re: 870 "custom"
I went and took some slightly nicer photos in a friends booth.
Pretty happy with the results.
The race I built it for has been delayed though,
