custom anodizing?

Post by MelvinsArmy »

I know this has been covered before, but I can't find any of the topics. I'm curious about how much custom anodizing costs. I'm thinking of doing some bike brake levers in gold. Anybody know roughly how much that would cost, who could do it, etc? I might have a stem to do too, but that's about it. Very small order, not sure if it will be worth the trouble.

bigjeepzz had this link in his team car runner thread...... http://rtraceshop.com/

I know most places will have a minimum dollar amount they charge for a run. You'll have to come up with alot more for it to be worth it. :? I would get some other parts together and make it worth your while. Re-ano an old tub, shock bodies, motor plates, nose tubes, throw in a truck nose plate and build an all gold 10T or something... Start diggin' through parts and anything you find aluminum, picture it in a nice new gold finish.. :D

The Ryan at the link posted above did my RC10 pan and a few other peices for $40 shipped. Did a really good job on the car and I will be using him again when I get another car ready to be anodized.

Looks like they're not taking any new orders currently. Can someone tell me the sanding process to get a tub to the point of when it's suitable for anodizing? For instance...for deep scratches... what grit sandpaper would you start with and how fine do you end with? I'm thinking maybe 320 or 220 ending with 800 or 1000. Does that sound close?

Shoot, $40 shipped sounds perfectly reasonable. Too bad they're not taking on any projects now. Anybody have any other leads?

Anybody have any other anodizers they can recommend? I used Mike's guy Don last summer and he did a great job, but he hasn't returned my recent email. I've got some r/c parts I'd like to do.

What about Jharris' guy. I think it's actually his cousin or some other relation. Might give that a shot, Harris' blue and purple buggies look great, IMO.

pargu2000 did the blue anodizing on my CYANide Optima parts, he charged me a very reasonable $35, but shipping both ways (to Korea & back) made the cost somewhat less attractive; it adds about $25 to the cost. I may use him again but I'm also looking for a closer anodizer. My upcoming third Turbo Optima needs some pigment! Looking forward to updates to this topic. 8)
