I have a problem spending anything over $300 for airline tickets anymore.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

Would it be "cheating" to go out and buy a new re-re frog just to race in the classic class?
Also, where does the RC10T2 stand as far as being able to race it?

The Tamiya reissues are perfectly fine. The T2 didn't come out until 95bngiles wrote:Would it be "cheating" to go out and buy a new re-re frog just to race in the classic class?

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
ok guys, i need some schoolin'. i'm looking around at brushless setups, and all the ones i've seen say that the 13.5 is comparable to a 27t stock motor. so, why is the 17.5 the legal one for this race? what am i missing?
i'm a total noob when it comes to the whole brushless thing.

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
Short answer: ROAR said the 17.5 = Stock
Long answer...in touring car, the 13.5 has so much more torque than a 27T that with proper gearing, they were dominating. So in a effort to make things even, they raised the winds to 17.5. BUT, in offroad, we truly dont have cars that can gear a 17.5 to take advantage of the torque, so a 27T is usually faster. Keep in mind, we are talking todays cars with 2.6 trannies, not our vintage 1.85 & 2.25 ratios. The 17.5 is a VERY viable motor with the right gearing.

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
Here's the thing...
On off road cars, a 13.5 is closer to a 27t brushed than a 17.5 is, but everywhere else, the 13.5 is almost identical to a 19t brushed. So ROAR has mandated for 2009 that the new brushless standard for stock racing in all classes is a 17.5, and I agree with them. We don't need more speed, we need less. For those guys complaining about the "slower" 17.5 in stock off road, they should look at some of the videos from the 80s stock classes so they can recognize what "slow" really is. The 17.5 is plenty of power on 6-cells for stock class.
In 2008, the 13.5 has been grandfathered in as "stock" at many places, along with the 17.5, but next year the 13.5 will be considered Super Stock (or 19t brushed) and illegal for stock class. The 10.5 which was long considered a 19t brushed equivalent will be only thought of as a mild Modified motor from here on out.
Fine with me, I say.

Exactly what i was going to put. I don't make the rules (actually i suppose i do huh?
). Honestly you guys will see that this track isn't really a horsepower track at ALL. It's def going to make for some great racing.

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
We actually designed the layout with a 17.5 brushless motor in my RC10B4, so the motor works fine on the track, you guys will have fun on the track, especially when your racing 7 or 8 other cars with the same horsepower. Our goal in the design of the layout was so that it would promote racers racing each other, not racers battling the track. So the track has good flow, with several spots that are good for setting up a pass. It only has one technically tough section that will be "toned down" before the vintage nationals as its a bit much for older cars and I don't really want to see people breaking parts they may not be able to replace and finish racing the whole event.
If Horsepower is what your looking to put down, show up a few extra days before, or stay a few extra days after and race a club night with a current kit (or your vintage) and run whatever motor you like.

aghh, but don't forget. there are a couple 2.6X conversions that came out before 1994.JK Racing wrote:Keep in mind, we are talking todays cars with 2.6 trannies, not our vintage 1.85 & 2.25 ratios. The 17.5 is a VERY viable motor with the right gearing.

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
i re-read your other post, and i guess i misunderstood why you typed. so, your saying that the 2.6 trans is actually a bad thing with a 17.5, as compared to say a 2.25. correct?JK Racing wrote:scr8p wrote:aghh, but don't forget. there are a couple 2.6X conversions that came out before 1994.I know...2 of my cars have "them"....

Re: *** The official VINTAGE OFFROAD NATIONALS thread ***
The gear ratios required with a 17.5 make the higher internal ratio gearboxes a much tougher math problem. We watched that all winter with 2.5 shaft drive TCs have trouble getting the proper gearing for these high torque motors.
Some of our guys were running 72t spurs on 52t pinions... in 64 pitch! The 1/12th scale carpet guys are bolting small spurs to the motors!!!
