Cat XLS re re electric newbie

Post by stewslash »

Hi guys
Growing up in the 80's the cat was my dream rc car ,ive been in and out of the hobby ever since , back then I could only stretch to a hornet and then a boomerang and a few other tamiya cars took a break ,then onto nitro buggies and stadium trucks , then had kids!
This lockdown has twiddling my thumbs and I stumbled across the cat xls re re , so naturally I immediately ordered one ! , I still have some radio gear but absolutely no knowledge of electric rc motors since the tamiya technigold was a thing
So ive got a cat xls on its was with the upgraded gearbox and need some advice on motor ,esc and battery , I will be going brushless and I assume 2s or 3r lipo?

any suggestion greatly appreciated

Ste

Great choice, I've got one too. You can take a look at my build thread here as it shows what electrics I used: https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=43284&start=15

There isn't a huge amount of space in CAT to get the electrics in neatly, a low profile servo will help, you'll need a 2S shorty lipo, I used a Hobbywing Quicrun 120A sensored speedo with the fan removed. Use whatever motor takes your fancy/price range as the Pro Trans upgrade will handle a pretty hot motor and be plenty fast on 2S.

Thanks evo this is all great information , my main stumbling block now is motor and esc , am I better off going for a combo set or buying individual ? , how do you find your motor/esc set up , what turn motor are you running and what size pinion are you running , sorry about all the questions mate

It really depends on how much money you want to spend as to what motor/speedo you to use. There are some good value combos available and generally buying separates will be a bit pricier.

It might be worth checking the Modern electronics forum to see what combo's other members have used.

I personally bought a Hobbywing speedo as they're decent quality/price and chose a motor that didn't break the bank. I went with sensored as they're smoother low down.

Programming the speedo is pretty straightforward as I have a few Hobbywing speedo's and can programme them from the program box & laptop using the Hobbywing download and USB cable.

I've ran an 8.5T and 10.5T in my CAT, I'd have to check what pinion I used but I will have used a FDR of somewhere between 8.5-10.5:1

I just checked, I have a 23T pinion on there at the mo with the spur that came with the pro transmission. It's been a while but I think I got the transmission ratio from either the main manual or the pro trans manual and fitted a suitable pinion.

Great build thread and good looking ride evo. I may pull the trigger, been wanting to dip my toe in something non- Associated and the Schumacher always looked cool to me
Big pile of RC10s and Ts from OG to 5s and an 18 or 3
